Xiaomi is known for its simple, affordable accessories, almost as much as it is for their phones, and the company’s latest effort is particularly eye-catching: AirPods-style wireless earplugs for under $ 30. They are called AirDots and have much of the same functionality as Apple’s product, including drop-off controls and a compact charging bag. Unlike AirPods, however, AirDots has silicone tips that allow for better sound insulation and a more secure fit. They also support Bluetooth 5.0.
At 199 yuan (about 29 USD) for pre-order in China, AirDots is highly unlikely to match up to AirPods in audio quality or performance reliability. I recently tested East O-Free Wireless Ear Plugs, which sell for 699 yuan ($ 1
00) and offer the most AirPod-like experience of any similar product I’ve seen so far – and even they could not get close to original.
But it is obvious that the technology of wireless earplugs continues to sip down to the point where they could reasonably be included in the box with phones soon. Xiaomi himself has the form in this regard; After announcing a wireless charger of $ 15 earlier this year, it’s now part of the package you get with the new Mi Mix 3 phone.
