ELLSWORTH – Health Equity Alliance (HEAL) presents a World AIDS Day event on December 1 at 6 pm. St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church.
This event will contain a spaghetti dinner, speaker and an opportunity to celebrate and honor those who have been lost for AIDS-related illness. This year’s theme is “Feel your status”.
This year is the 30th year of the annual event. “What started in 1988 as the first global health day continues today to make people join the fight against HIV, support those living with HIV and remember those who have died,” says a statement from the Health Equity Alliance.
In Maine 2015 (the latest figures from the Maine Centers for Disease Control), 48 new cases of HIV and 26 cases of AIDS were identified.
HEAL, formerly the Down East AIDS Network, was founded in 1
987 in response to the AIDS epidemic. Some of the Agency’s original customers are still active with the organization.
“Our medical case managers support people living with HIV by helping them maintain their health, employment and living standards,” said Willow Yerxa, Case Manager and Mental Health Services at HEAL. “Our customers depend on the support they receive from both our managers and each other.”
