A high school in Birkenhead, England has banned its students from wearing expensive jackets because they continue inequality between classmates. It is part of the school’s goal of ending “poverty shaming.”

Woodchurch High School told the parents about the ban on Canada Goose jackets, together with those of the Moncler and Pyrenex brands, in a letter reported Global News. The letter urged parents to be aware that students who watched their comrades in expensive jackets often pushed their families to buy similar things, even if the price was too high for them to afford.

“We are very concerned about the school of poverty and the school environment and thus we met students and made the decision in consultation with them.” Woodchurch’s doctor Rebekah Phillips told BBC News.

Students without expensive winter equipment feel upset, she said in an interview with independence. “They feel stigmatized, they feel omitted, they feel insufficient.”

The school is committed to minimizing the differences between students – two years ago, mandate that all students must use the same backpack. It also decreased uneven days because the students were bullied for their clothes. The school’s commitment to gender equality for its students is not without reason – 46 percent of its population of 1,427 students come from low-income families.

A former student wrote to Phillips and said that the decision was one step in the right direction because the school should not be a place where students’ economic background rubs their face and distracts them from learning, “according to CNN .
