Week 10 college football picks, games, odds: Notre Dame, UCF on upset warning in critical spots

This is the most anticipated week in the college’s football season so far. Not only does Week 10 give a plethora of College Football Playoff-caliber games, it’s just after the selection committee released its first round of mock rankings . But with so many important games this week, how radically different will next week’s rankings see?

Yes, there are games that guarantee shaking things up. No. 1 Alabama at No. 3 LSU has a lot of riding on it. So also No. 6 Georgia at No. 9 Kentucky. But there are also a number of ranking teams that play quality, unfamiliar opponents this weekend. That’s where things can get very interesting.

Every week I will give you the top five warning games based on matches, injuries / suspensions, and other factors. Limitation of Liability: “upset” is defined first and foremost by point spread, not perception or ranking, although both are considered. I generally avoid games whose lines lie within a touchdown with the exception of cases that warrant them. I also go to the post with the picks and hold the tabs. The scoring system is exactly the same as it is for our weekly personality picking with Seasonal Plates against Spread (ATS) and straight-up (SU).

Week 9 Results

Resolved Warning Picks: 4-1

ATS: 4-1
SU: 2-3

Select until now: 26-19
] ATS to date: 22-23
SU so far: 20-25

On this week’s election

Temple at No. 12 UCF

When: Thursday, 7:30 ET | Where: Orlando, Florida | Line: UCF -10.5

Why It Is Listed: As UCF’s athletic director Danny White told CBS Sports & Dennis Dodd “There is a whole lot of people want us to lose. “Granted, I do not want want UCF to lose, but it is possible that it happens Thursday. Temple has already knocked out an undefeated ranked team, Cincinnati, challenged one of ACC’s highest teams, Boston College and hit a 5-3 Maryland. The owls have been better when the season has evolved.

Temple Key to the Game: Running back Ryquell Armstead (ankle) back would be helpful even though he has not been a player vs. knights before. But if there is a weakness against this UCF defense, it is against the run. The owls must keep the service without letting this get too crazy because they are less likely to win if this game comes into the 30’s or 40’s. Shootouts are not their thing.

UCF’s Key to the Game: The Quarterback McKenzie Milton’s Health is also an issue. He did not play against East Carolina because of undiscovered damage. The knights did not need him then, but they need him here if he’s available. The temple has AAC’s best scoring defense in the last month.

Select: Both layers are excellent against the spread and come from an open week. With the AAC East division on the line it should be close. In the end, I’m more confident in Milton’s return from harm and influence. ATS: Temple, SU: UCF

Oklahoma State at Baylor

When: Saturday dinner ET | Where: Waco, Texas | Line: Oklahoma State -7.5

Why it’s Listed: Oklahoma State was floundering and became quite a big victory over Texas outside the open week. Trust Mike Gundy to draw things when the occasion requires it, but this game will tell if the Texas win was an anomaly. And after playing terribly against No. 13 West Virginia as part of two straight losses, Baylor seeks a betting game.

Baylor’s Key to the Game: If Charlie Brewer (Hacking Protocol) or Jalan McClendon begins at quarterback, Baylor must protect himself better. West Virginia got all sorts of pressure in the backfield a week ago and it got Bears behind the pins and behind the scoreboard with a speed.

Oklahoma State’s Key to the Game : Pokes finally got the ground game vs. Texas with Justice Hill and Chuba Hubbard. Even quarterback Taylor Cornelius was involved with some success on the zone reader. Baylor’s defense is rough, but the Oklahoma State’s offensive comes and goes with the rushing attack.

Select: Neither team is missing athletes, but they lack consistency. If the Oklahoma State holds ground the game works, it will be difficult for Baylor to stop it. The cowboys have found a formula. Can they hold on to it? ATS: Baylor, SU: Oklahoma State

No. 4 Notre Dame at Northwestern

When: Saturday 7:15 p.m. ET | Where: Evanston, Illinois | Line: Notre Dame -9.5

Why It Is Listed: This game has been circulated in one minute as a possible chaos kickstarter. Not only is Northwestern 4-0 against the spread like a dog, it’s 3-1 straight in those situations (the only loss was 20-17 against Michigan and Wildcats also led in it).

Northwestern’s key to the game: It drives back Isaiah Bowser. Northwestern is not known as a good rush, but Bowser has churned out 100 yards in each of the last two games. The low key, the wildcat’s mood style with three feet and a cloud of dust could carry down even fighting Irish.

Notre Dame’s Key to the Game : The Irish have a top 10 defense and northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson is talented but hit or miss. If Notre Dame removes these short passes, or prevents them from turning into bigger games, Northwestern may be in trouble.

Pick: The wild cats are good at shredding things and keeping it close. I suspect they will do it again with linebacker Paddy Fisher is a big problem. And while Northwestern is not statistically a good crime, they are leaning hard at Bowser to close it. ATS: Northwestern, SU: Northwestern

No. 7 Oklahoma at Texas Tech

When: Saturday 8 p.m. ET | Where: Lubbock, Texas | Line: Oklahoma -13.5

Why it’s Listed: Of course, the potential of a shooting game is certainly high. This is a game with two top 10 scoring points and these are the types of games when Red Raider coach Kliff Kingsbury brings out an ace or two that he has been working on during the week.

Texas Tech’s Key to the Game: Red Raiders will not hold Oklahoma in a lot of three-and-outs, but they’re good when it matters. Texas Tech has one of the better red zone defense not only in Big 12 but in the country with a 48.15 touchdown percent.

Oklahoma’s Key to the Game : There is no scoutteam quarterback in the country that can prepare a defense for what Kyler Murray provides. He is a deadly scrambler and how he expands plays makes it virtually impossible for defenders in the cover to stay on his guy. Texas Tech will take his swings with pressure, but it will get better with him. You come to the king, you must not miss.

Pick: Oklahoma’s loss to Texas earlier in October was first and foremost a match problem. Texas Tech does not drive the kind of power failure that can give Sooner’s fits. This will be fun and borders ridiculous, but Oklahoma has just too much to try to defend. ATS: Texas Tech, SU: Oklahoma

Cal at No. 8 Washington State

When: Saturday 10:45 p.m. ET | Where: Pullman, Washington | Line: Washington State -10.5

Why it’s listed: Oh hi yes, give me that cute # Pac12AfterDark nightgown on a busy Saturday. Cal, fresh for an upset vs Washington, has one of the country’s better defenses – 11th overall, per S & P + – and has been playing light in the last two weeks. Washington State goes into part of the season where it has a big goal on the back.

Cals key to game: Stop the passport, of course. The good news is the golden bears are No. 1 in Pac-12 in that category and bound for the first with 12 interceptions. They may even need a pick-six / non-offensive touchdown to pull within really striking distances.

Washington State’s Key to the Game : An overlooked aspect of Washington State’s surplus is that it can not put together a solid 60-minute football. They are streaky. It’s not inaccurate for a Mike Leach team, but it’s something to keep an eye on. If quarterback Gardner Minshew begins to cook, it may be light outside for Cal.

Pick: The bears are troublesome enough defensively to frustrate Washington State, but the Cougars do not have the same offensive problems Washington does. Cal, on the other hand, can only win this game if it is a defensive match. ATS: Cal, SU: Washington State
