Water Fasting, as the name suggests, is a type of Fasting in which for a set period of time, you consume ONLY water. No crackers, no bread, no anything – just water.

You might be asking, why would I do that? Can I get through a day without any food?

Well, yes! In the old days, Fasting is a normal part of everyday life. There are no refrigerators before, neither convenience stores to get a little snack when you’re hungry. They hunt and eat what they have at the time. Some people also have undertaken fasts for religious nor spiritual reasons.

Now that food is available almost anytime anywhere, it’s hard to think it’s doable. But it is! And what’s wonderful about water fasting is that it brings lots of benefits to your health.

Improved Cell Recycling (Autophagy)

Autophagy is a natural process where the body recycles old parts of your cells to create new parts.

It is a key part of your body’s ability to regenerate itself,  destroy and recycle damaged tissues and detoxify. This autophagic state can only be achieved in water fasting and high-intensity exercise. Research shows that autophagy may help protect certain diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer and heart diseases.

Lowered Risk of Several Chronic Diseases

Evidence shows that water fasting lowers the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Water fasting protects the body against damage from free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage part of your cells- they play a vital role in many chronic diseases. When you fast, your cholesterol blood levels and triglycerides are lowered. Those two are the risk factors for heart disease.

Water fasting switches the body to burning fat instead of glucose.

The brain is forced to use not glucose for fuel bit ketones. Ketones are more efficient fuel for the brain. Because of this we, fasting increases concentration, focus and mental clarity

Obviously, not eating leads to less body fat. When you stop eating calories, your body is forced to burn fat cells for energy.

Water fasting helps you reach ketosis. Ketosis is the state where your body begins to use energy from your internal fat stores rather than food. Weight loss can also be achieved in other types of fasting like intermittent fasting.

There has been a study that shows that water fasting regenerates the immune system.

It has been found that fasting prompts stem cells to regenerate new white blood cells. The stem cells begin to proliferate and rebuild the entire system. Water fasting is a good practice for those with immune problems like those who are undergoing chemo. It may also be beneficial as we age since immune function decline with age.


Water fasting offers several health benefits. It is hard to perform in the beginning, but easier as the days go by. But note that water fasting is not for everybody. It is advisable that you consult your doctor first before trying it.
