Volkswagen will develop its final generation of vehicles using combustion engine technology in 2026, said the company’s strategichef on Tuesday.
VW made a strategy shift towards battery-powered vehicles in the wake of a harmful scandal against diesel emissions by 201
5, which forced the car manufacturer to pay billions of dollars in fines to conceal excessive pollution.
“In 2026, will be the final product launch on an internal combustion engine platform,” said Michael Jost, the Handelsblatt Car Conference Conference at Volkswagen Headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.
A spokesperson confirmed Jost’s remarks that VW, Europe and China’s best-selling passenger car brand will focus on electric cars instead.
VW continues to adapt its petrol and diesel-powered cars to meet the environmental standards of these vehicles, but the German car manufacturer has now taken radical steps to boost global warming, “said Jost.
As a way to meet the goals of Paris’s climate agreement, Volkswagen has changed its car development targets to include the goal of radically reducing carbon dioxide pollution in production, “said Jost.
