Apex Legends has become a giant hit since its inception in early February. But that success was surprised by Respawn Entertainment, and its Vince Zampella, surprised.
Zampella talked to Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price during a special session today at GamesBeat Summit 2019 in Los Angeles. During the chat, Zampella noted that Apex Legend’s popularity hit its expectations from the start. It has made the studio quieter than it would like to be.
Apex Legends is a fight royale. It is also a free game-live game. Before working Respawn on the Titanfall series, which focused on things like deathmatch and story campaigns. The studio does not have experience of creating content, or even knows what kind and how much content it should do for something like Apex Legends.
This has made the team silent while they are drawing things out. As Zampella noted, it’s hard to just tell people: “We don’t know yet.”
But this can also lead to frustration with society. Players want to know what’s coming and when. Zampella said he wants to improve that communication.
He also made it clear that the work of Respawn’s new game, Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order, will not interfere with Apex Legends. Two separate teams work on these projects.
When it comes to the Apex Legends team, they still have a lot to figure out. Zampella noted that some members of the team are still discussing whether three players are the right size for squads. And it still determines what type of content it should prioritize to do while working on balance changes and bug fixes.
