How will it work?

Delta says that customers enter their passport information during check-in online. Or at the airport, customers can scan their passports to check in. After that, passengers can click “look” when they check in to one of Dell’s automated kiosks. The traveler’s face scan is matched by passport or view images on US Customs and Border Protection file. Delta says that customers have the same options as they “approach the camera at the counter in the lobby, the TSA checkpoint or boarding at the port.”

Since Delta has rolled out the option in Atlanta before the formal launch, the carrier said it has received positive feedback and that it helps speed up the boarding of its international flights.

“Almost all 25,000 customers traveling through ATL Terminal F each week choose this optional process, with less than 2 percent choosing, “said Delta in a statement. “Based on initial data, the Face Detection option saves on average 2 seconds for each customer on board or nine minutes when boarding a wide body plane.”

Delta plans to make its Detroit hub next terminals to get the biometric option “curb to gate”.

The features will be added to there next year, Delta said.

“It is a great honor for Detroit Metropolitan Airport to become one of the country’s first biometric terminals,” said Chad Newton, interim director of the Wayne County Airport Authority that runs the Detroit airport. “We look forward to working with Delta, CBP and TSA to enable passengers to utilize face recognition throughout their travel process. “
