] LOS ANGELES (AP) ̵
1; Notre Dame’s offensive skill players gathered on the sidelines and looked up at an unbeatable view of the scoreboard. The fierce Irishman had not encountered a double-digit deficit at any time during his perfect season before southern California jumped to a 10-0 lead Saturday night.
With his national championship suddenly dreaming in a lot of pieces of difficulty, running back Dexter Williams spoke up.
“Someone has to make a game!” Williams screamed.
Ian Book and Chris Finke did just that on Notre Dame’s next unit, and Williams did it right after half past time.
When the Irish were finished playing at the Colosseum, they were well on the Road to College Football Playoff with Jeweled Shillelagh in hand.
The book passed 352 meters, Williams walked 52 meters on a forward-touchdown run and Nore Dame finished an undefeated regular season and probably got a playoff place with a 24-17 over long-standing rival USC.
“It gives tears to your eyes,” says Notre Dame cornerback Julian Love. “So much is added to this, and it was very tough at times. It feels just so good to come here. Nothing has been handed over to us. USC fought this year, but they would not just leave it to us. We had to go out and grab it. “
Finke made an exceptional TD catch for the first point of Fighting Irish (12-0, No. 3 CFP), which showed the playoff level show in rallying from their biggest deficit of the season. Tony Jones Jr. then took a short pass 51 meters for a touchdown at 3:09 to play to end Notre Dames 10th perfect regular season since 1945, the first since 2012.
“That’s something I dreamed about, so to have It’s really so, it’s a surreal moment, says Book, California, which improved to 9-0 as Notre Dame starts, including 8-0 this year. “This whole team, we’re just so lucky to be here. USC, they played well. We knew they had a good defense and in order to finish the season outside unanswered in a rival game, you can not ask for anything better than that. “
Williams rushed 97 meters, when the Irish outperformed a slow start in the 90’s in this known intersective rivalry. Notre Dame did not score until Finke’s TD caught just before half-time, but the Irish beat 24 at each other the following points and closed the USC in the second half until Tyler Vaughns TD reached 48 seconds to play.
Notre Dame is all but Some to be selected for the four-team playoffs and this win could keep the Irish away from the Alabama power plant in that the first postseason game. The Irish celebrated with great speed in the Colosseum storage room, with its cries echoing through the old walls into the USC room.
“It’s just such an emotional pace,” Irish dancer Drue Tranquill said. “We just danced there in. I can not really dance, but I tried. “
JT Daniels went 349 yards for the Trojans (5-7) who will stay home for the bowl season after his first losing season since 2000. Vaughns caught 12 passes for 120 meter in what might have been the last game for coach Clay Helton, who is under pressure after the Trojans have lost five of their last six games in a devastating case.
USC Atletic Director Lynn Swann did not immediately make a message about Heltons future.
“The best is not yet I really believe it,” said Helton. “I looked at the men who are out there, both old and young, and see guys who are really talented individuals who will develop into a quality football team who can win championship. I know that and I believe in them. “
After the USC won eight straight over Notre Dame in the 21st century, the Irish have won six of the last nine meetings of this classical college football match. Notre Dame is the first road team to win in the series since 2012, when the Irish also ended an undefeated regular season with victory at the Colosseum.
Only four American teams have stopped losing record since 1961, but it is clearly talented the group gave a tough game to the power plant Trojan’s 289 meters in the first half were 64 more than the Irish had allowed half past time all season, and Notre Dame had only trailed twice at any time throughout the season.
Although Jones was late in the end zone they finished The expected result for Notre Dame was that the Trojans were competitive against an elite opponent despite the underlying part of his coach’s future.
USC’s 10-7 half-time could have been much bigger, but recipients Michael Pittman Jr. and Amon-Ra St. Brown both fumbled after catches in the Notre Dame territory. Irish crime did not score until 2:20 before half-time on the 24-yard throw to Finke, who had not taken a TD pass since the opening of the season against Michigan.
] Notre Dame: The Irish showed resistance throughout their odyssey in a season, and nicely beats an inspired USC group is nothing to be ashamed of. They will be happy to have the test because they are leading a two-game shot at their first national championship since 1988.
USC: The Trojans turned out well for Helton despite the gloomy circumstances, but were regressed by turnover, punishment and bad play after half the time. Swann would announce his decision on Helton’s future soon.
Helton won the Pac-12 last season and Rose Bowl just two years ago, but a large part of the Trojan’s fan base is publicly agitating for termination of the coach, who received an extension of the contract in 2023 just nine months ago.
When Helton’s face appeared in a recorded announcement on the scoreboard in the first half, he was excited by a part of the Coliseum 59.821 – the smallest for the Notre Dame-USC game in Los Angeles since 1960.
Notre Dame expects to be invited to the four-team playoff, hopefully to meet Clemson in Orange Bowl, who had several representatives outside the Irish dressing room.
USC’s worst season at 18 years is over.
