A swarm of Tornado’s rocky central Illinois on Saturday, making it one of the most violent December days in state history.
Over 20 preliminary tornadoes were reported, according to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center.
“The actual number of confirmed tornados will be determined by greatness surveys in the coming days,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun.
Tornades snapped trees and power lines and shifted a house outside its foundation in Macon County .
About 10,000 customers were without power in the state on Saturday night. This number dropped to under 3000 on Sunday morning.
In Taylorville, all non-residents were invited to avoid the city due to severe storm damage and closed roads, according to the Illinois State Police.
“All residents in Taylorville are invited to stay in their homes and off the streets as first responders responding to multiple calls,” said the state police on Twitter.
Several people were sold captive due to storm damage in the city, according to ABC7 Chicago.
At least 100 buildings were destroyed city, according to The Herald & Review .
Illinois governor Bruce Rauner activated the state Emergency Operations Center, located in Springfield, in response to the severe storms.
“We activated the state emergency response center so that we could carefully monitor the situation, keep in touch with local officials and quickly mobilize any government assets that may be needed,” said the governor in a statement. “If government support is needed, we are well positioned to provide them fast and efficient. “
There have been no immediate reports of deaths or life-threatening injuries.
A powerful storm system that released heavy snow from Nebraska to Minnesota on Saturday was also responsible for sparking the unusually violent beginning of December in Illinois.  “Torna dos can happen a month a year across the United States, but they are more common to occur over Deep South in December, “says Rathbun.
“There are on average about 24 tornades in the United Kingdom States in December with one per year oc curring in Illinois,” he added.
From 1950-2017, a total of 55 tornadoes have occurred in Illinois in December, according to the National Weather Service.

For cleaning and recovery work in the next few days, there are quieter but much colder weather on the way.
“Outside of a spooky rain or snow well on Sunday, it will be mostly dry and chilly over central Illinois through the early part of this week with daytime heights in the early 30’s on monday,” said Rathbun. Nighttime lows will pop into the 20’s.
