Water fasting is a popular method of fasting. It offers numerous benefits to your health and wellness if done properly. Yes, it looks impossible to live on water alone for a days or few days.  But it can be safely done! A short term fast that is well planned can bring supreme benefits to your health. Here a few tips on how to perform a water fast.

Before Fasting

Consult a doctor

It is important to consult a doctor first especially if you :
  • pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have an eating disorder
  • are underweight
  • are undergoing a blood transfusion
  • have medical conditions (heart problems, type 1 diabetes, uncontrolled migraine)
  • are taking a specific medication
NOTE:  There are other types of fasting that may be applicable to you if you really aren’t for a water fast.

Arrange your schedule

When you fast, you will feel weak and tired especially on the first few days. If possible, choose days when you don’t have work so you can rest and maximize your fasting time. If it’s your first time to enter into a water fast, try it a 24hour fast or a 3 day fast.

Build up to a fast slowly

Before entering into water fasting, you must start reducing your meal size.
You cannot eat your usual meal the day before and cut it the next day. A smooth transition is important.

During Fasting

Pick a time when you can rest. Water fasting can may you feel weak at first so avoid demanding exercises. To help conserve energy – sit down and avoid strenuous activities.

After Fasting

Break your fast slowly

Don’t eat too much right after your fast. It may cause stomach ache. Start by eating soup or soft cooked veggies. You can also eat some gentle fruits, drink fresh juice them gradually add solid foods. Heavy meal right after a fast would cause series of complications.
