The Dodgers have played baseball since 1884, Red Sox since 1901, and this only marks the second time they have played each other in a post season series and the first time in 102 years – when the former was known as Brooklyn Robins and Babe Ruth beat all 14 innings to win Game 2 of the Fall Classic for the latter. With it as a wonderful starting point, this can be one of the world’s largest series in recent years.
The Dodgers, who lost in Game 7 in the World Series last season, try to win it for the first time since 1988. The Red Sox – who fired Astros, the team who beat Dodger’s last year – won a franchise record 108 games this season. Dodgers hit more home runners than any club in franchise history. Red Sox boss Alex Cora, a former Dodger, tries to be the fifth rookie skipper to win the World Series. Dave Roberts, who has a special place in the Red Sox story with his famous stolen bass in the 2004 American League Championship Series, is Dodger’s boss. Cora and Roberts were teammates with Dodgers in three seasons. Two of the three oldest ballparks in baseball will serve as hosts. A matchup of two of the best-left-handers of the decennium ̵
1; Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale – is possible not only once but twice.
Everything is possible here.
Three reasons why Red Sox will win
1. Crime. The red sox knocked around a large Astro pitching staff for 29 runs in five games; Houston had not allowed seven runs in three consecutive games this year until the ALCS. Perhaps it should not have come as a surprise given that Red Sox led the big leagues in almost all major offensive categories this season.
Boston vs LA can be a classic confrontation in basketball, but the 2018 title is an MLB first. How do the two clubs match?
From the wildcard round through the World Series, we get the 2018 postseason covered.
The surprise is that Mookie Betts and JD Martinez do not wear Red Sox in the dismantling of Astros. It was more Jackie Bradley Jr. who won the LCS MVP by driving in nine runs, all with two outs, a short of Yogi Berra’s record (1956) for most two-out RBI lists in a postseason series. It has been the secret of the Red Sox Offensive from 2018: No. 1 to 9, it does not always look scary, it contains its fair share of soft spots, but it always seems to produce.
Red Sox is especially good at home, where they went 57-24 this season, the best record in the big leagues. They spent an average of 5.8 runs per game at Fenway Park and allow 4.0 runs, the second largest difference of any team in the last 15 years. Fenway can be especially dangerous for left hands, and Dodgers are likely to start three left hands.
2. Outfield Defense. Red Sox has the best defensive space in the game. They start three centerfielders: Andrew Benintendi in the left, Bradley in the center and Betts in the right. Bradley can win a gold glove this season. In game 4 of ALCS, Betts, the best defensive rightfielder in the game, a home that was driven by Jose Altuve turned into an interference call by skipping the right field action to make an attempt to capture. Benintendi saved the game with a two-dive catch and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning. With all the strikeouts in the game today, the defense has been undermined on a few days because fewer balls are recorded but no team can win with a poor utfield defense and a good defensive defense like Boston can mean the difference in not just a game but a seven-game series .
3. Chemistry. It’s corny, it’s cliché, it’s hard to quantify, but in the case of the red sox, it’s the gathering that they really show. It began during spring training, during which Boston nearer Craig Kimbrel had to leave the team to be with his 3 month old daughter who needed cardiac surgery. When he returned, the team embraced him; the players and the coaches stood in the middle of the clubhouse, held their hands and prayed. “I’ve never seen it before in my career,” said Martinez.
At the end of the spring training, Corps Eduardo Rodriguez took the whole team out for dinner. “Everyone turned out,” said Cora. “Of all the teams I’ve been on, I’ve never seen it.” In mid-August in Philadelphia, Rodriguez hit a simulated game at 2 pm. before 7:00 pm game. Betts, who were not in the match that night, were there to see the simulated game. David Price, the highest paid player on the team, was there who stands behind the pile and acts as a pioneer and supporter.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Cora. “This is different.”
One reason I’m going to be wrong
Dodgers did not play very well in the National League Championship Series against Brewers – they looked terrible in their three losses – but still won in seven games. That’s what great talent can do: get up when it has to. And the dodgers are so talented. They beat the most homers in NL this year. There are big arms in their rotation, including Kershaw, who throw lots of basketball balls and sliders these days, and Walker Buehler, who throws most gas. Their bullpen was surprisingly good in the fall season, led by closer Kenley Jansen. They have a deep, versatile bench, one that allows them to match everything that Red Sox has to cope with. They have a lot to play for, making a loss in the 2017 series.
