Maryland opened its overall game and strengthened an already formidable driving attack with rarely used Javon Leake.
The result was an emotional 63-33 route across Illinois, one that was definitely worth singing well on Saturday night.
“The game room, we’re there and singing the (Maryland match) song, these guys are happy,” said Matt Canada, Chancellor of Chancellor. “We found a way to win. We played good at offensive, good on defense, good at special teams. “
Leake rushed for three touchdowns and did on a 97-foot kickoff return, Kasim Hill had the best passing the game of his career and Maryland held Fighting Illini without touchdown until the end of the third quarter.
Leake is the first Maryland player to score four TD in a game since DJ Adams in the 201
0 Military Bowl. Leake, a sophomore, finished 140m rushing, including scores of 64 , 27 and 43 meters.
“The offensive line did a good job today,” Leake said. “They just set me up to play.”
Before Saturday, Leake had 16 careers, only nine this season. “He was not at the top of the list in the back yard that the season began,” said Canada. “He continued to work hard.”
The victory left Terrapins (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) a victory card to be eligible, no small achievement for a team shaken by the offensive line death Jordan McNair and has played under Canada since August.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the program, Maryland has already exceeded its overall profit (4) from last year.
“The whole point is that our guys have checked their ego and just want to win,” said Canada. “We are here 5-3 with a lot of kids playing so hard for each other and caring for each other.”
Canada , the team’s offensive coordinator, took over for DJ Durkin, who is on administrative leave during a survey of the program’s culture.
The probe began soon after McNair collapsed on the training field and died from heat radiation in June. The report is ready. The Commission decided there was a problem with the program culture, waiting for the school and the football team at the fallout.
Reggie Corbin ran for 155 yards and a touchdown for Fighting Illini (3-5, 1-4). Illinois had resulted in 158 points under a tree game skating, and its streak to force a turnover in 21 consecutive games ended.
“It’s kind of beyond the feelings we have right now,” coach Lovie Smith said. “There have been a few cracks or as we have seen, but not like this. We knew what was at stake, thought we would play much better. I thought our preparation was good, but as you can see it was not. “ Starting quarterback MJ Rivers was fired from the game in the second quarter at a meeting by Tre Watson, who was challenged. The rivers went 3 to 13 in 45 meter.
Leak kickoff return and 64-yard run, along with two touchdown passes by Hill, provided Maryland with a 28-9 half-time lead. Terrapins tackled three touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 27-yard run by Leake and Hill’s third touchdown pass.
Hill was removed from the game late in the third quarter with points 49-19. He went 11 to 19 for a career high 265 meters, and his three TD crossed a career best.
Illinois plays for the first time Maryland set up a school league for most points in a Big Ten game since joining the conference in 2014. The terps ended 712 meters in violation.
It was a redemption show for a team that just erased 115 meters one week earlier in a loss of 23-0 for Iowa.
Watson leads Terps in tackles and is bound for the coach in interrogations, but this is the second time he has started targeting.
Watson played three seasons for Illinois before joining Maryland this year.
Johnson, Mary’s leading rusher, missed another half with a leg injury. He ranks fourth in the team career list with 2 597 meters.
Illinois: Illini has a bad defense, simple and easy, especially when it is not possible to force sales.
“Big games make us really hurt,” Smith admitted.
Maryland: Yes, for a game at least, Terrapins tried to pass and throw. There would be an asset in upcoming matches against the Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State.
Illinois hosted Minnesota, who defeated Indiana 38-31 Saturday for his first big ten win this season.
Maryland meets visiting Michigan State (5-3, 3-2) who defeated Purdue 23-13 on Saturday.
