October 30, 2018 – Infection control experts are sent to a New Jersey rehabilitation facility where an outbreak of adenovirus has killed nine children, says health officials on Monday.

“Total 25 childhood diseases have been associated with this eruption” at the Wanaque Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Haskell. “An employee at the plant – which has since recovered – was also ill as part of the outbreak”, according to the Public Health Department, reported NBC News .

Adenovirus usually causes cold-like symptoms, but may be fatal in weak patients. The children at Wanaque have developmental disturbances or immune deficiencies.

Infection control professionals will also visit other facilities similar to the Wanaque Center, as well as a public hospital where another type of infection occurred in four early children. One of the children died, NBC News was reported.

“The team will visit the University Hospital, Wanaque Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Haskell, Voorhees Pediatric Facility in Voorhees and Children-Specialized Hospital in Toms River and Mountainside,” said the Health Department.

The team will strengthen basic infection control procedures, Dr. Shereef Elnahal, State Health Commissioner, told NBC News .
