Doctors say patients with high blood pressure should be aware and be ready to act on the drug withdrawal regimen involving a commonly prescribed type of blood pressure medication – but warned to release a drug without consult a doctor or pharmacist.
The Food and Drug Administration announced the revocation of several versions of valsartan in July over concerns that the drugs contained a potential carcinogenic contamination.
Several drug companies have announced revocation of valsartan, irbesartan and losartan versions. The affected drugs may contain a contaminant called N-nitroso-diethylamine, a possible carcinogen in humans, according to the FDA.

The recalled drugs are part of a large class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers. ARBs work by widening or blowing the blood vessels. Thus lowering the person’s blood pressure.
ARB and another class of blood pressure medicine called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or ACE inhibitors are often the first drug doctors who recommend lowering the patient’s blood pressure, according to Dr. Robert M. Carey, Dean Emeritus at the University of Virginia College of Medicine.
“These are recommended as primary treatment for hypertension,” said Carey, chairman of clinical practice committee of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. “So when you get reminders, you start to worry about what the options would be.”
While a small number of ARBs have been revoked, Carey said that doctors and patients still have many options. Patients are often prescribed an ACE inhibitor instead of an ARB. ACE inhibitors have not been affected by recall. In addition, several versions of ARB drugs have not been revoked.
Carey said that a small number of patients taking ACE inhibitors can develop cough. Doctors often switch these patients to an ARB or other drugs such as a diuretic or calcium channel blockers.
“There are several agents in both of these classes that can serve as an alternative while the recall problem is being developed.” Carey said.
Doctors urge patients who are currently taking versions of a recalled drug is talking to the pharmacist or doctor. Discontinuing the use of a blood pressure can cause greater harm to a patient than the small increased risk of cancer.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told the US today that the Agency increases drug quality focus to protect manufacturing problems suspected as a source of contamination in recalled blood pressure medicine.
