Surface Go: how to make Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home or Pro

I recently bought a Surface Go device to check it out and write a thorough review later. I would not have done it if the device would come with a locked Windows 10 S operating system and no option to upgrade. Why? Because Windows 10 S limits you to what is installed by default, Microsoft Store and Web applications. All older Win32 applications do not run on Windows 10 S. While some users may not mind, if you only use Office and the Internet, you cannot think that you cannot install Win32 apps, I think and that affects my purchase decision . I purchased the 128 Gigabyte SSD 8 Gigabyte RAM version, an additional Surface Go type cover, and a USB-C to USB 3.x and 2.x adapter. Anyway, the very first thing I did when I finished the original setting was to figure out how to make Surface Go a complete Windows operating system. The very first thing you might want to do is verify the version of the operating system. One option is to use the built-in Winver tool.

Open the Start menu, type winver and select the result ( Tip : See a list of Windows tools like Winver here). Windows displays the version under the copyright line in the application window that opens.

The system on the screen shot above returned Windows 10 Home in S mode .

Microsoft’s operating system did not show tips or a suggestion to make the S version a full version.

How to do this in detail:

The process is simple when you know what to do. A restart is not required and the entire action takes less than ten minutes to complete.

Step 1: Open activation in the setup program

 windows 10s for home professionals

Open the setup program with shortcut Windows-I. If you prefer to use the menu, select Start> Settings instead.

Select Windows Update> Activation to display the operating system activation status. It should mark the version of Windows at the top (again Windows 10 Home in S mode for the device I was using) and the activation status (usually enabled with a digital license).

Below you see options to switch to full versions of Windows. The offered version depends on the current release of Windows.

If you have Windows 10 Home in S mode, you can upgrade to Windows 10 Home for free. Similarly, you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free if you have Windows 10 Pro in S mode. You can upgrade Home Versions to Pro. Microsoft requested € 99 for the upgrade.

Select “Go to Microsoft Store” under the “Change to” link on the page.

Step 2: Turn off the S mode
