I’m down with it
Pretty much everyone on the planet loves Kirby. Even if you hated fighting with him, says Super Smash Bros. 64 you still loved him deep down. The little puff ball is impossible to hate: its creator HAL Laboratory made him that way.
It turns out that he is also extra special so much that he trumps the rest of the Smash crew from annals on Nintendo’s history. According to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai survived Kirby Apocalypse in the last trailer (as you can see again below) because he was not “normal”.
Speaking to Famitsu (as translated by Source Gaming), Sakurai says that they needed a “convincing cause” why Galeem, the new great bad, could be defeated by someone who would lead the charge and any revolution against it. He notes that even characters with limited magic / powers would not be the best Galeem, so Kirby was chosen because of his Warp Star. The only other contenders were Bayonetta and Palutena (referring to their power from a lore point of view), but their enemies were either too strong to overcome or it would not be pointless from a historical point of view that they were running.
It’s a sweet reasoning (and a little pat on the back of the two), but Kirby is also much more family-friendly than Bayonetta and more marketable than the Palutena. Still, hearing Sakurai explain something as a minute as a trailer / story details, why he is so good.
