The FBI has classified the proud boys as an extremist group since at least this last summer, according to a law enforcement officer in Washington State.
“The FBI categorizes the proud boys to be an extremist group with ties to white nationalism,” wrote the author Michael McCabe, author of the document completed on August 10.
McCabe, who runs internal affairs, education, background investigation and court protection for the Clark County Sheriff Office in Vancouver, Wash., Confirmed the authenticity of the document to The Guardian in an article published Monday.
He also told the British newspaper that the FBI classification of the proud boys as an extremist group was revealed to him in a August 2 briefing by the FBI.
The FBI said they “warned [local law enforcement] for a while” about the proud boys, told McCabe The Guardian.
The FBI drove a little back on McCabe’s story. The Office told the Hill “The FBI can never initiate an investigation based solely on the individual’s race, ethnicity, national origin, religion or the exercise of rights for the first change.”
“Our focus is not on membership in certain groups but on people who commit violence and criminal activity that constitute a federal crime or pose a threat to national security,” the statement said. “The FBI does not and will not be policing ideology. “
A law enforcement official also told The Hill that the FBI does not appoint groups.
Founder of the founder Gavin McInnes has repeatedly said that the group is not a white nationalist or right organization.
Amazon and PayPal have both linked ties with the group after several members were involved in a violent conflict in New York
Facebook also forbids accounts related to the proud boys.
