Steam Link hardware is dead, long live the Steam Link app

Valve is undoubtedly good at software, both own games and game publishing and distribution platform. However, it seems to be a worse trip when it comes to making and selling their own hardware. Steam machines, both own and partners, have long been considered a failure, but the other parts of its ecosystems also fall into pieces. The latest connection to the Valve Hardware Cemetery is the Steam Link box, which may have been far ahead of its time.

When launched in 2015, the idea behind Steam Link has been the same alien to PC players as steam engines. The idea of playing PC games on something other than a computer was not only odd, it could even be heresy for some players. It did not help Valve hit a $ 50 price on a relatively unknown and single edge.

Fast-scrolling up to today, but streaming games are no longer fiction cooked by some companies. It may well be the future. In addition, games that can be played anywhere, with the help of any controls available, began to get a certain appeal. There are also some who may want to play PC games on their phones without having to buy a special version of the game or pay for a special subscription.

Unfortunately, that change has come too late for Steam Link hardware, so it’s no surprise that there are no more Steam Links sold in the US and Europe. You may find some at dealers and resellers but with regard to the valve, Steam Link is dead. However, it will continue to support it, but it does not say until after.

The Steam Link hardware is also largely unnecessary right now. Valve has already made a software version with exactly the same features and more. Unfortunately, the Steam Link app is only available on Android for now, with the iOS version still under negotiation.
