Consumption of too much soda can negatively affect your health. In fact, it may increase the risk of diabetes more than other sweet foods, according to a new report.

Researchers from St. Michael’s Hospital and Toronto University in Canada have recently conducted a study, published in the British Medical Journal, to determine how different sugary foods affect blood sugar levels.
To do this, they examined 155 previous studies on the subject. The assessments evaluated individuals with and without diabetes for up to 12 weeks.

After analyzing the results, most foods that naturally contain fructose sugar, such as vegetables, fruit and natural fruit juices, do not affect blood glucose levels. But foods with added glucose, such as soda, breakfast cereals, pastries and sweets, have harmful effects.
The team said that foods that add excessive “nutritional” energy to the diet, especially sweetened beverages, can be particularly harmful.
“These results may help guide recommendations on important food sources for fructose in the prevention and management of diabetes,” said John Sievenpiper in a statement. “But the evidence is low and more high-quality studies are needed.”

The analysts confirmed some restrictions, including small sample sizes, short follow-up periods and a limited amount of food. But they noted that their research was profound and thorough.
The researchers hope to continue their investigations and urge more caregivers to be “aware that harmful effects of fructose sugar on blood sugar appear to be mediated by energy and food sources.”
