Amazon’s Alexa-driven devices are truly market leaders in the smart speakers category. And the more time that passes, the more useful they seem, thanks to the fact that developers provide new “skills” to the devices – and even technical giants like Microsoft let Alexa access their key services and features.
To the other point, Microsoft has just announced that Skype calls are now available through Alexa, with Amazon’s Echo hardware that supports basic Skype calls. In addition, Skype video call support is supported by Amazon’s Echo Show, the company’s speaker that also sports a monitor.
Of course, not only Microsoft. Pandora also strengthens its partnership with Amazon, making its paid subscription class Pandora Premium available through Amazon Echo devices and Alexa speakers from today. Per Verge Pandora Premium can now stream songs, entire albums and playlists to Echo drives, and you can also set Pandora as the default music library on Alexa. For this, you can only stream music from Pandora’s online radio.
To use Pandora on Alexa devices, just start a “Alexa” command followed by asking her to play either Pandora or a special song or genre you want.
For the Microsoft news, when you link Skype with Alexa, you get 1
00 minutes free calls per month for two months, so 200 free minutes in total. To configure Skype on your Alexa device, you can use the Amazon Alexa app for Android or iOS. You then go to Settings > Communication > Skype to link your accounts and then sign in with the Microsoft account you use on Skype.
Again, from The Verge : “Skype and Alexa integration follows Microsoft’s increasingly close collaboration with Amazon for Alexa, Cortana and Xbox integration. Xbox One now supports Alexa, and Amazon has launched its own Alexa Windows 10 app to get digital assistant to all computers. Microsoft has just begun selling Amazon’s Echo devices in its US retail stores this weekend. “
