Barcelona researchers have developed an unusual drug delivery method directly into the brain. It is based on scorpion poisoning.

The Department of Biomedical Research in Barcelona published in the Journal Chemical Communications is an article describing the use of a peptide derived from Scorpion’s poison for the delivery of drugs through the blood brain barrier (BBB). This barrier protects the brain from toxic substances, but also lacks many potentially useful drugs.
“About 98 percent of drugs that may have therapeutic application can not be used because they can not cross this barrier,” explains the head of the laboratory by Ernest Giralt.
The researchers were able to chemically synthesize chlorotoxin and several of its analogues have retained some of the properties of the original peptide. They investigated the activities of these compounds in cell models from BBB and have shown that the MiniCTX3 peptide can carry compounds via BBB with a very high degree of efficiency.
Like traditional medicine, using natural products like plants and flowers for the treatment of various diseases, researchers sought inspiration in the poison, which aimed at the determination of peptide shuttles.
“Our goal is to get drugs broken in the brain. To achieve this, we combine them with peptides, specifically designed to pass the BBB. The conversion of these drugs into Shuttle will increase its effectiveness,” said co-author Maricel Tayside ( Meritxell Teixid o ).
“There are only two or three groups in the world involved in Shuttle peptides. We work with several strategies, one of which is the poison, “explains Geralt.
In previous studies, researchers have developed the Shuttle peptide to pass the BBB through a peptide from the apiary.
