MUMBAI: The highest court that imposes strict rules on the sale and use of firecrackers before Diwali is likely to affect the sales of the most unorganized industry around Rs 20,000 crore per year.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday confirmed that only fireworks with reduced emission and decibel levels may sell at all festivals also with strict deadlines.

On Diwali, tiles can run between 8:00 and 10:00, while people can blow firecrackers on Christmas and New Year’s Day between kl. 11:55 and 12:30, ruled the top shot.

It is also categorically stated that crackers can not be sold online and warned of strict penalties for possible crimes.

“Annual fireworks sales amount to Rs 1

5,000-20,000 crore, of which at least 5,000 crore comes from Chinese imports. Apex court orders will definitely affect sales, but it is difficult to quantify losses, as the industry seems mostly unorganized,” Praveen Khandelwal , Secretary-General of the Confederation of All-India Traders told us.

He also stated that cracks are sold by permanent traders and also by those with temporary licenses in front of Diwali.

“We urge the government to speed up the issue of temporary licenses to help part-time / temporary sellers of cracks to liquidate their shares,” he added.

Crackers imported from China, he said, are more toxic and the verdict of the Supreme Court, which aims to improve air quality during the festival period is a good move.

When asked about online sales of crackers, he pointed out that in the last two to three years most online sales have been uncontrolled and this ban on online sales of crackers will ensure better compliance.

Kumar Rajagopalan from the Retail Trade in India said that the top orders are good for the environment as the order will keep control of sales and the quality of the sold cracks.

On the impact of modern trade or online store, he pointed out that most of the power sales take place through temporary sales outlets in the districts established during festivals. Modern trade usually does not sell cracks.

However, he said that e-commerce sites must ensure that all their sellers have the right information about the Supreme Court.

E-commerce Flip chart and Amazon refused to comment on the issue. Both of these sites have not listed any firecrackers on their platform.
