A few hours before kickoff, as Boca’s bus ran to the stage to avoid trouble, River Plate fans broke windows, and may or may not have used some kind of pepper spray or tear gas: [19659009] Boca Juniors players in distress, reportedly hospitalized

The bus arrived at the ground, but not without the attacks being felt. Boca players, including Carlos Tevez, disembarked in distress:

It’s unclear whether the pepper spray / tear gas came from River Plate supporters or police trying to disperse and dissuade the fans. Either way, it clearly affected players.

The club’s secretary general Christian Gribauldo said some players had been cut by glass, and were not in any condition to play. Some reports stated that Boca player Pablo Perez had shards of glass in his eye . Others said three players had to be hospitalized.

Perez was seen departing the dressing room, and has reportedly been ruled out with an eye injury – if The game goes ahead as planned.

The damage to the bus

Video from inside the Boca Juniors bus hours later showed the damage to the bus:

But the damage to the players is at the heart of the decision : To play or to postpone?

Will the game be played?

The game, for now, is still set to be played on Saturday – but will not kick off at the originally scheduled 5 pm local time (3 ET). Even after CONMEBOL’s announcement that kickoff would be pushed back at least one hour, the presidents of the two clubs and CONMEBOL officials were locked in discussions about how to proceed.

As or 3 ET, players had not emerged for warmups. Discussions were ongoing. FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is in attendance, had joined the South American officials.

Per reports, an independent doctor would examine Boca Juniors players to determine whether they were fit to play:

But two had already headed to the hospital. Og selv om de har båret, ikke varende, fysisk skade, de var sikkert påvirket mentalt. Club officials do not want the game to go ahead, claiming the players are not in any condition to do so. And they’re absolutely right.

The first leg

The first leg, an absolute doozy, finished 2-2 at La Bombenera, home of Boca. On Thursday, two days before the second leg, Boca fans packed the stadium again … for training:

On Saturday, they gave their team a raucous sendoff.

But the day went awry around El Monumental. Police failed to control the situation:

And the passion of both sets of supporters has been marred by the bus attack – by the idiocy of a few.
