Report: Hawaii is the healthiest state. Utah ranks 5th, Louisiana ranks last

NEW YORK (CNN) – When the new year is approaching, many people focus on improving their health – but how are you doing instead of health? Hawaii now stands as the healthiest country in America and expels Massachusetts to return to the top of a new report from the United Health Foundation, an ideal division of UnitedHealth Group, which also owns United Healthcare and Optum insurance companies. Hawaii, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Utah are the five healthiest states this year, while the five least healthy ones are Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi and, most recently in Louisiana, according to the annual US Health Rating Report released last week . The report has been conducted annually for the last 29 years. "A rank means you are generally healthier than the states below you in the rank and are overall less healthy than the states above you in the rank," says Dr. Rhonda Randall, official of UnitedHealthcare National Markets and a senior adviser to the report on American health classification. "The report provides a benchmark for how the health of every state's population has changed year by year compared with other states and insights on challenges and successes.

“A rank means you are generally healthier than the states below you in the rank and are overall less healthy than the states above you in the rank,” says Dr. Rhonda Randall, official of UnitedHealthcare National Markets and a senior adviser to the report on American health classification.

“The report provides a benchmark for how the health of every state’s population has changed year by year compared with other states and insights on challenges and successes. The top five countries in the list have areas where they can improve. in the bottom five have areas that they have done well, “she said.” So each state has some areas where they are challenged and some areas where they have some really strong actions about their health. “

Last year, the five Healthy states same but in different order: Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Utah and Connecticut. The least healthy last year was West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Previously, Hawaii had a five-year-old

In order to create the ranking, the report takes into account 35 health factors and examines them by state.

The 35 actions fall into categories: “The behaviors we choose in our lifestyle. The society and the environment where we live the public policy that takes place at the state level and the clinical care we receive when we go to the doctor and the hospital ultimately affects the results around our health, says Randall.

“A scientific advisory committee looks at each of these actions and determines on the basis of scientific evidence, how much of an impact this measure has on the overall health of a population,” she says. “Then the states get a ranking for each individual action, and then they get an overall ranking.”

“From the one that touched us most, obesity has become very high. America’s obesity for the adult population, for the first time in the history of producing this report, has increased by 5 percent over the past year. It struck 31.3 percent in 2018, says Randall.

In other words, almost one in three American adults are obesity.

Obesity rates also appeared to be high in many of the states ranked as least healthy. The presence of obesity in West Virginia is 38, 1 percent, almost twice the prevalence in Colorado, where it is 22.6 percent, according to the report.

“Another thing that concerns us as we found in this report was that premature death increased 3 percent over the past year. That means years of life lost before people reach 75, says Randall.

“It is often associated with a number of factors – things like our lifestyle choices, living with more chronic diseases,” she said. We also know that the suicide rate has also increased, and it would contribute to the increase of premature deaths along with other causes. “

The report measured the suicide rate as the number of deaths due to intentional self-harm per 100,000 deaths recorded on death certificates, and data showed that US suicide rate has increased by 16 percent since 2012.

The report was not all sentenced and gloomy, it had

“Childhood poverty has diminished,” Randall said.

“It is a key indicator of someone’s socioeconomic status and a good prediction for how their overall health will be for the rest of their lives. That childhood measure decreased by 6 percent since last year, she says.

“We also see that there are more mental hospital providers than in previous years,” she said. “This measure looks at mental health care professionals of all grades, so it looks at psychiatrists, psychologists, psychologists, marriages and family therapists as an example, and so the number has increased nationally.”

Some of the state differences in the rankings can be explained by social determinants of health, says Dr. Georges Benjamin, Managing Director of the American Public Health Association, who was not involved in the new report.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define social determinants like the complex social structures and economic systems that can drive most inequalities in health, such as access to healthcare or education.

“If you think of things that cause premature death – heart disease, perinatal deaths, tobacco-related diseases – in many ways they are stimulated by social determinants,” says Benjamin.

For example, “Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, to be in the bottom, and that type continues to the Arkansas and Tennessee area. When looking at some of the challenges they face, it is still about tobacco use and poverty and, in part, physical inactivity, he says. “These are the things we know result in fundamentally bad health problems. What we would like to see is that all states are improving.”

When the nation looks forward to 2019, Randall said, she has some hopes for public health.

“What I hope we will see next year is that some of these trends are starting to go in a better direction. For example, the smoking trend in the United States has declined consistently over 29 years in this report.” It encourages me, “said Randall. 19659002 “If we focus our attention on other lifestyle choices – like physical inactivity, like obesity – and find out as individuals who motivate us, what are the small changes we can make we will stick to,” she said.

“Anyway – if it carries something that tracks your activity and it encourages you to just add a little more time to your daily life: if it’s a friend you’re going to go up and take the dog along with “Whatever will motivate you, there will be something that can help you hold on to it.”
