Red Dead Redemption 2 lets you fish, and it’s a rugged, enjoyable and endearing quest that’s perfect for the game as a whole. It’s also a bit involved, so we’ve compiled a guide to help you learn the basics so you can quickly catch fish and have a fun time.
From now on, fishing in Red Dead Redemption 2 is unlocked by playing Chapter 2 Story Assignments “A Fisherman of Men” where you teach young Jack Marston to fish. You take some Jack down to the river for a fishing lesson, and this serves as your introduction to the system.
The first step is to choose your fishing rod from the Options menu. Then you have to attach bait to it, and it is divided into two categories: Bobber and Lure (more about later).
Hold LT / L2 to seize the rod and then RT / R2 to throw. How long you hold down RT / R2 determines how far the throw goes. It may take you a few times to get a feel for it, but it’s worthwhile to land a casting just where you want it. When you have thrown out your line, what happens next time depends on the bet you used. With a bobber you just have to sit and wait to get a bite. You can press RT / R2 to attract a nearby fish (if you stand close enough to the beach you can even see the fish in the water) but do it too much and you’ll be kidding them. With a lid you must roll in until you feel a bit. If you see a fish, throw it over it and roll the lid so that the fish sees it coming from. Be sure to wait until you feel a strong bite before striking – with a bob or a trick – because the fish often nibble a few times before biting into the hook. Once you have landed a fish, the real work begins.
The fish will immediately return, and you will feel your line becomes tight, with your rod bending in response to the cheek. Wait until the fish gets tired before rolling in. Trying to roll as a fish sucks to break your line. With a fish on the line, tap the left stick in the opposite direction, the fish moves to tire it faster. You can also click in the correct stick and push it in any direction to prevent the fish from taking out more. However, you must be careful about this approach, as you can easily snap your line. You will also snap your line if a fish goes away and ends up behind a rock or other object.
You roll in by rotating the right bracket counterclockwise. You want to roll in as quickly as possible when the fish gets tired, while paying attention to how much line you have, how tight the line is and where the fish is in the water. Pressing the left will hold onto when you roll, which makes the fish go straight towards you. I found it helpful, if not a bit embarrassing, to use my thumb and index finger at the same time to roll even faster.
The amount of game that a fish puts in is directly related to its size and type. You will be able to roll in smaller fish like bluegills, rock bass and smallmouth bass with relative ease. But catching larger fish, like Sturgeon and Sockeye Salmon, can mean fights that take several minutes to complete. If you snap your line you will lose the bait or attract yourself, but do not be discouraged as there are plenty of fish found in Red Dead Redemption 2’s many lakes, rivers and swamps.

There There are many different types of fish found in Red Dead Redemption 2’s lakes, dams, rivers and the swamp. Here are the ones we have captured so far, as well as the type of bite that gave the highest likelihood of reeling them successfully.
The time of day means if you want the best fishing success. Early morning and afternoon is when the fish bites the most, because of bugs flying near the surface. You should also try to fish when it’s raining, because the drips on the water make the fish think there are bugs around.
To find the fish you are looking for, you need to fish the right place. Here is an overview of the places where we have found the following fish.
A further remark is that fish, especially larger, loooovvvvve to hang out at the mouth of the waterfall, because the water is more acid-resistant than other areas. Try there if you’re fighting.
Go to the beach of Flat Iron Lake in Heartlands to a place called Gill Landing. Here you meet a stranger named … Gill, who is a world-famous fisherman, or at least that’s what he wants you to believe. He will give you a map of the locations of 13 epic big fish found throughout the game. Call them all and report back to Gill for your price. These are really powerful fishes, so expect the toughest fish species that the game has to offer. You must use the “special” caps mentioned above to bag these big ones. The best advice I can give is to try to catch them when they are already near the beach, so you lower your playing time significantly and improve the odds of landing the fish. Here is the map:
There are unpenned billy goats throughout Lagras that can cause problems when fishing. On several occasions, I was near the swamp and a goat hit me and broke my fishing line while I rolled in. It was frustrating and I thought it could have been a bug. But it happened three times, so the lesson here is to watch out for goats while fishing in Lagras.
At a certain amount of hours in the game, you will steal a boat and take it to the camp. By this time you can use it to move on to a lake to go for the larger fish that usually live in deeper waters. You can also steal boats you will find on your trip to fish anywhere you want.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has snowy and cold places with frozen lakes and ponds and one of the legendary fishes is in a lake that is partly frozen. However, there seems to be no true ice fishing where you live through the ice and drop in a line. Here, hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 gets the guaranteed seller “Ice Fishing Expansion” on the way …
