The militant Hamas group celebrated the spell as a challenge to Israel, which lost a major military response after a rocket was fired from Gaza on Wednesday and destroyed a house in southern Israel.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported 77 Palestinians injured by Israeli fire and six of them were in serious condition.
“The threat of the Israeli enemy has effectively motivated the masses to participate strongly in the protest,” said Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas, who has organized the protests since March.
The great presence was a test of Egypt’s efforts to push Hamas to scale down the protests and tipping into marchers daring to the fence and breaking it, triggering fatal Israeli fire.
At least 156 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire since protests began more than six months ago, and an Israeli soldier was killed by a Palestinian sniper.
Protesters Friday burned tires and threw stones with slingshots against the heavily guarded fence. Hamas al-Aqsa TV sent pictures of Palestinians who climbed across the fence and others violated it and entered Israeli territory. Others used cutters to tear down parts of the barrier.
Israel’s forces showed up the protesters with tear gas and sometimes lived a fire.
In the southern Gaza Strip, an airplane met a group of Palestinians who launched flaming dragons and balloons against Israel in a protest position, the Israeli military said.
Earlier on Friday, the UN’s Intermediary Committee called on Israel and the Palestinians to exert command before the protests.
“In the light of today’s planned Gaza march, I urge everyone to exert command, to proceed peacefully, and to avoid escalation,” said Nickolay Mladenov in a statement. “The UN is working with Egypt and its partners to avoid violence, address all humanitarian issues and support reconciliation.”
Egyptian intelligence officials met with Hamas and Israeli officials on Thursday in efforts to measure a ceasefire and light months of death border protests. Egypt and the United Nations have tried to negotiate an armed violence between Israel and Hamas for weeks in an attempt to ease tensions in the beleaguered Gaza Strip.
Hamas has said protests will continue until there is a relief of the Egyptian-Israeli blockade of the Palestinian enclave introduced after the Islamic group took control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority in 2007 in a armed coup.
The protests have been intensified in recent weeks, as Egypt and UN relatives in the fire department have failed and transboundary violence earlier this week has caused tensions to a simmer.
On Wednesday, a rocket dismissed from the Gaza Strip destroyed a house in the Israeli city of Beersheba in the worst fight against violence in recent weeks. Israel recalled with disturbances and has broken its military forces along the border.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Security Council decided to relieve more seriously to cross-border attacks, but has hitherto refrained from further action and suggested it gave the Egyptians a chance to restore calm.
