It is the most intimate and revealing portrait of the prince of Wales hitherto. Prince, son and heir: Charles of 70 will fly on BBC One tonight, less than one week before Prince Charles 70th birthday.
To make the documentary Son and heir: Charles of 70, director John Bridcut spent 12 months shading the prince of Wales. The result is an enlightening portrait of the future king, the most intimate so far, revealing Charles as a deeply emotional man who loves his children, is surprisingly hot and has more energy than a man of his age. He also hates selfies.
“For a man turning to 70, I think his energy is most surprising to me,” said Bridcut Vanity Fair. “He has amazing physical and mental energy. Yes, he is taken care of in a way that most of us are not, but he compensates for the amount he fills.”
Prince Harry, as well interviewed for the documentary reveals that his father works in the early hours and often falls asleep with a note attached to his forehead. Charles is a keen notifier telling about his employees if they do not come to meetings armed with a pen and a notebook.
“He gets annoyed when he has meetings and people do not write down things,” said Bridcut. “Charles writes everything down on a notebook, and he expects his staff to do the same. He is not into new technology. There is no iPad; it’s about laptops and handwritten letters.”
According to Bridcut, the prince quotes his beloved grandmother, queen mother, as an important influence in his life. “He told me that he learned from the Queen Mother how important it was to see and notice everything. This observation really made me feel, along with his work ethic. Charles has focused on climate change, which is a lifetime perspective for most, but he is also involved in so many other different things that make him very impressive. It’s not superficial – he’s passionate about it. He absorbs things. “
Charles also inherits a love of opera from his grandmother, and what can be a royal natural contact with large groups-Bridcut describes him as “unexpectedly hot” and “remarkably easy with crowds”. But he does have limits. “He gets annoyed by people poking their phones on them. I heard him tell people,” I’m trying to give up self-esteem. “He wants to meet people, and it hurts him to shoot camera phones in the face.”
The castle was recently forced to answer the rumors of bad blood between Charles and his sons, and the documentary goes on to prove their ties with Prince William and Harry shares both what they have learned from his father . “I think in the past year or two, Harry has been a real champion for his father,” said Bridcut. “I found out in the interview [that] he was very open and unprotected and very committed to his father. He felt terrified that his father’s warnings were not correct. It was very touching to hear that he spoke publicly and so warmly about his father. “
Prince William, however, shares what he has learned from Charles’s work ethic – even those parts he does not always like. “He talks that he wants his dad to see more of his family,” said Bridcut. “I did not feel it was a pointy comment, I think it was an all-natural comment and meant lovingly. Charles works hard, and there’s a role in the movie where William says he used to find Charles’s disciplined routine frustrating. But now admiring he’s his work ethic. “
One last rumor to break: Charles’s fast mood. “I can imagine it must be crazy to have a film crew follow you for 12 months,” said Bridcut. “Much of the time Charles had a radio microphone attached to him who could easily pick up things, but he was very good-tempered. You hear that he is ill-tempered and short of people, but for us he was always gracious and welcoming. He has not seen
