In a surprising move, Sony announced that they are skipping E3 2019.
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage in society,” said Sony in a statement to Game Contributor. “PlayStation fans mean the world for us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to please players. Therefore, we decided not to participate in the E3 2019.”
Sony also stated that they are exploring “new and familiar ways to engage in 2019 and can not wait to share our plans.”
The idea that Sony is not on the E3 is really weird. Not only is the first E3 ever that they will not participate, but Sony is responsible for some of the biggest highlights of the show’s history. In fact, their latest press conferences are generally seen as the gold standard for E3 presentations. Of course, not everyone was on board with his elaborate (but boring) multi-stage setup at E3 201
Interestingly, this presentation could have been the key to Sony’s decision to jump over the E3 2019. It was clear that Sony thought beyond the limits of the E3 event and maybe even beyond the limits of their own shows (remember that they have interrupted this year’s PlayStation Experience event). Of course, there are some questions about what Sony will replace these events with. The obvious answer is that they will run a single event that may run out of (or around the same time) by E3. We would be shocked if Sony skip events altogether.
However, we would not be shocked if Sony is going to the Nintendo route and launches direct ads directly online. Not only are such messages cheaper and undoubtedly closer, but they have the added benefit that they are extremely controlled. In other words, they are free from live presentation errors. It is also possible that this decision has something to do with those who want as much control over PS5’s disclosure as possible.
It is also worth noting that Microsoft has taken the opportunity to announce that they will still host an E3 2019 conference. Suffice it to say they will pay a lot of extra attention at next year’s show.
