Home / US / Pair of moderate Kansas GOP legislators lacked democrats
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Two moderate Republican legislators in Kansas became Democrats on Wednesday and capping an unprecedented round of GOP defects in the Kansas City suburbs soured on President Donald Trump and a close political alliance of his this year’s governor’s race.
State Secretary Dinah Sykes and Rep. Stephanie Clayton joined two other moderate legislators who swapped last week. All four women are from Johnson County, which is the state’s most populated county and which democratic government-elected Laura Kelly was in the November elections.
Kelly defeated Conservative Republican Kris Kobach, Kansass State Secretary, who trumped his imprisonment by Trumf. The Kansas City area’s voters also expressed dissatisfaction with the president by choosing Democrat Sharice Davids, a native American and LGBT attorney, to congress by wiping out the Republican leader Kevin Yoder.
Clayton said that her decision to leave GOP had cause for concern. Its leaders are not committed to increasing public school funding. She also acknowledged that her constituents, especially women, were upset by Trump and said that her discomfort with his policies helped her leave GOP. PHOTO

“I hear everyday from people who have been Republicans for their lives, lifelong, and they just said,” I can not do this longer. This is not what I stand for, “and that’s how I felt, said Sykes.” I’m better served to focus on my job than trying to defend the Republican party. “
In Oklahoma, the state has the Rep. Johnny Tadlock , representing a rural area in the south-eastern part of the state, switched to the Republican Party. In 2017, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice also grew to GOP in a state trump that won nearly 42 percentage points.
The Kansas Democrats have had some high-profile part exchanges under the last 20 years, especially 2006, when Mark Parkinson, a former state-owned GOP chairman, ran out as a Democrat for the Lieutenant Governor. He became Governor in 2009 when the Democratic Government Kathleen Sebelius resigned to become the United States Health Care Secretary.
But last During the week, only five legislators had exchanged parties over the past 50 years, four of them Democrats who became Republicans. A Sixth Legislator, the State Sen. John Do ll, a moderate from west Kansas, left the gop in march and became independent of a failed lutnant governor round.
According to the state library there is no record of four legislators who change parties in such a short span.
Nevertheless, the Republicans will retain super majorities in both legislative chambers, slide to 84-41 in the chamber and 28-11, with the doll as the independent, in the senate. In addition, the legislature appeared from the election of the year more conservative, with GOP moderately losing the ground to conservatives.
“This is not surprising switches,” said Kansas Republican President Kelly Arnold, adding that the legislators worked and voted regularly with Democrats. “I think they finally decide that you know they do not need the Republican brand.”
Republicans enjoy a 3-to-2 denomination benefit in Johnson County, but GOP moderate has been a political force.
Kelly bore Johnson County with almost 17 percentage points and David won there by almost six percentage points. Even Democratic candidates for attorney general and civil servants, who lost a wide margin, across the country broke smoothly Johnson County.
“If there was a blue wave in Kansas, it was in Johnson County,” said the prime minister’s leader, Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat.
Patrick Miller, a politician in Kansas, saw the results in Johnson County and the party changes as part of an ongoing national political transformation.
“There have been moderate republicans in suburbs becoming democrats and conservative democrats in rural areas becoming Republicans,” Miller said. “It definitely disappears Trump. It was bleeding enough and we noticed it more under Trump.”
Sykes and Clayton joined State Secretary Barbara Bollier, declaring Rep. Joy Koesten, who changed parties last week. Clayton won re-election last month as Republican, but Koesten lost his GOP primary and will leave office in January. Sykes and Bollier are in the middle of four-year terms and voters again in 2020.
Sykes defeated a conservative executive in the Republican primary in 2016 when she won her seat.
Clayton was first elected to the 2010 chamber and helped organize a bipartisan woman Caucus.
“The suburban women I represent are definitely beaten by the president,” said Clayton. “They are disgusting with this burn-it-all-down setting.”
