Amazon has bids on 22 regional sports networks, or RSNs, including New Yankees YES Network, according to sources familiar with the sales process
CNBC reported First on Amazonian commandments.
RSNs are regional cable channels that usually carry live games from local vocabulary, colleges and even high schools as well as comments related to those teams. In December, the investment bank Guggenheim Securities Fox’s RSN package valued at $ 22.4 billion.
Disney sells the RSNs after buying them from 21
st Century Fox as part of its wider acquisition of Fox’s entertainment assets of $ 71.3 billion. Federal regulatory authorities told Disney that it would approve the deal only if it sold the RSN.
If Amazon wins any or all of the RSNs, the acquisition would signal the biggest flight yet by a technical company to the sports media. In recent years, technical companies have experimented with playing some games, but have not yet acquired any of the exclusive, big budget offers that usually go to major TV companies.
Owning RSN would provide Amazon insight into the economy of local sports rights as well as an avenue to experiment with smaller, non-national matches.
Amazon is currently streaming NFL’s Thursday night game, which is still on TV on NFL Network and Fox broadcast networks.
Among the RSNs for sale are Fox Sports Arizona, Fox Sports Detroit, Fox Sports Florida and a handful of other regional cable channels that have the rights to local professional sports teams.
Amazon has become one of the biggest players in internet-delivered streaming media with its Prime Videopaket, which is part of its wider Amazon Prime subscription service. Amazon Prime Video offers a mix of original series and licensed movies and TV shows.
However, the addition of RSNs would mark a new addition, if included in Prime Video, allowing the company to differ from competitors like Netflix and Hulu.
