From respiratory diseases to fertility problems in heart ailments; air pollution has disappeared from human health in more ways than you can imagine. What’s scary is that children are more susceptible to air pollution. A new study shows that exposure to outdoor air pollution can increase the risk of intellectual disability in children, a study conducted in Britain has found.

A research group has linked intellectual disabilities among children to increased air pollution, stressing that outdoor exposure can prevent cognitive development.

“We know that people with intellectual disabilities in the UK have poorer health and die sooner than they should,” says Eric Emerson of the University of Sydney, Australia.

“This research adds another piece in the essence of understanding why it is so and what needs to be done about it,” Emerson said.

Children with disabilities were 33 per cent more likely to live in areas with high particles of diesel particles and 30 percent more likely to live in areas with high nitrogen dioxide.

“These children were 30 percent more likely to live in areas with high carbon monoxide levels and 17 percent more likely to live in areas with high sulfur dioxide levels”, showed results.

The researchers, including those of Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, note that intellectual disabilities are more common among children living in more socio-economically deprived areas that tend to have higher air pollution.

The authors of the study financed by Public He England and published in Journal of Intellectual Disability Research adds the claim that exposure to outdoor air pollution can prevent cognitive development, which increases the risk of intellectual disability.
