Nintendo just adds another nail to thechest. Nintendo closes all video streaming services for the console at the end of January, according to Netflix. While Netflix’s website lists January 30 for the date the service ends, the service also sent an email containing the news listed on January 31
, which was later published on Reddit. E-mail reads:
“Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii-including Netflix Channel-after January 31, 2019. We hope you will soon enjoy an even better Netflix experience with additional features on a device like Support Please visit netflix.com/wii for our device list. “
We have reached Netflix to clarify the date, but regardless of whether Nintendo seems likely to shut down other streaming services for Wii-like Hulu and Amazon Video – also.
Wii was a smash hit in its flowering day, selling over 101 million units. Although it’s 12 years old, it’s probably still floating in plenty of homes – and its ability to stream Netflix or Hulu has kept it relevant.
My old Wii is still connected to my parents’ house as a dedicated Netflix machine. But when Nintendo takes away the power, it may be time to retire my Wii forever.
At least, Nintendo can let you stream video on youror (Sorry, Netflix is not on the power button yet, you must use or Hulu instead.]
