Nikola Jokic's Doughy Shoulders can carry the load

Photo: Matthew Stockman (Getty) Sometimes it's hard to imagine the soft, lovely Nuggets center Nikola Jokic as the kind of superstar that can carry a team simply. Part of this is due to the above-mentioned body, which succeeds in being both cowardly and clumsy and completely undamaged during a time when the NBA is ruled by guys with street shark physics. There is also the fact that Jokic is not sort of taking 26 shots in one game and eating a defense alive, or squeezing a lot of opponents shots to the backplate as a classic superstar great one should. During the last five games, however, Jokic has shown that he can take over and unilaterally push Nuggets forward when needed. The last five games have seen Nuggets roster at its most depleted, with the keys Gary Harris, Paul Millsap and Will Barton out of lineup. But they have gone 4-1 in these games, including victories over Raptors and Thunder, and they have been paced by a remarkable aggressive Jokic. Jokic has never been the kind of player eager to take more than 10 to 13 shots in a game or score more than 15-18 points, but in the last five games he is on average 26.6 points, 12 returns and sex help a game. He has taken 18.2 shots a game over that stretch, and he struck 54.9 percent of them. He really went for it during the night's victory against Mavericks, with 32 points in 25 shots. And…

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine the soft, lovely Nuggets center Nikola Jokic as the kind of superstar that can carry a team simply. There is also the fact that Jokic is not sort of taking 26 shots in one game and eating a defense alive, or squeezing a lot of opponents shots to the backplate as a classic superstar great one should.

in these games, including victories over Raptors and Thunder, and they have been paced by a remarkable aggressive Jokic.

He really went for it during the night’s victory against Mavericks, with 32 points in 25 shots.

And what shots were they! Jokic is usually talked because of his ingenious level passes, and for good reason, but he has as many tricks to get the ball in the basket as he does to get it in the teammate’s hands. He can shoot from anywhere, he has every slow motion, defense relegation a terrestrial big man could ever ask for, and he has a remarkable control over that free body, allowing him to drive and stop and pop and float and throw the ball in the hole from all sorts of strange angles. This game was listed as a “jumping jump” in the night’s official boxing results, but it is described more precisely as “a little jokisk skit”:

19659004] This is not even accurately described:

It will always take care of Jokic’s defensive constraints and challenges for the roster building they are currently challenging but the last five games have shown that it’s so stupid to spend too much time worrying for those things that Jokic can not do when he can do so much. People used to worry about Dirk Nowitzki being too soft and defensive even to the point he went straight to Miami Big Three and got away with a title.

Besides, it’s fun as hell to see a player who dominates NBA games like Jokic has been. There is no denial of the thrill that comes to see Giannis Antetokounmpo leap over the court in a single band, or when looking at Joel Embiid evolves to Shaquille O’Neal with sliding contact, but Jokic offers a different kind of pleasure. Instead of athletic shock and pain, whimsy and creativity. Looking at the jokian highlights is like telling a series of joke by your good friend, who you wish you were hanging out with, each one that provokes a smirk and a chuckle. If Jokic ever does something crazy like winning an MVP prize or an NBA title, then we’ll only be able to make that answer is smirk and chuckle.
