Finally, after a huge wave of leaks and rumors, the Huawei P20 Pro is now official . The Chinese firm, which opted not to present anything during the MWC 2018, has shown its new Huawei P20 family , composed of the P20 Lite, P20 and P20 Pro. The latter is the flagship of the firm, and has some specifications and features that compete hand to hand with the main giants of the industry. In this article we tell you everything. He Huawei P20 Pro , like his two younger siblings, he drinks from Apple’s design – something he may like more or less – and aligns himself with the construction trends that we have been seeing in recent months . We find a screen that occupies almost the entire front, a small notch and, as a novelty, a triple camera in the back that will give a lot to talk about. It is this, precisely, the main selling argument of the new P20 Pro . It is true that we have a beautiful design and power in abundance, but the top of Huawei range has a series of own characteristics -protagonized by Artificial Intelligence- that make it unique. In fact, saving a couple of specifications, the camera and its capabilities are the main differences between the normal P20 and the P20 Pro . But let’s not get involved anymore, let’s go to the mess!
Starting with the aesthetic section, the Huawei P20 Pro delights us with a design that, as we anticipated before, it reminds us infinitely of the iPhone X . The back, built in glass and surrounded by an aluminum frame, welcomes the triple camera signed by Leica -which will be discussed later- and is slightly curved at the edges for better ergonomics. As far as colors are concerned, the Chinese firm offers us several possibilities: Black, Midnight Blue (blue), Pink Gold (rose gold) and Twilight (The novelty, since it changes color according to the position and the way it gives light).
We get to the front. It is dominated by a 6.1-inch AMOLED 2.5D panel with FullHD resolution (2,240 x 1,080 pixels) , Or what is the same, aspect ratio 18.7: 9 . This is one of the main differences with its small brothers, since the P20 Lite and the normal P20 have IPS LCD technology.
As you can discover in the images, the Huawei P20 Pro has a good screen but it also has a shy notch in the upper area. This, much more subtle than the Apple solution, houses the internal camera, the speaker and the front sensors. On the other hand, in the lower area we find a framework that, fortunately, has been used to fit the fingerprint reader -because there is a framework, at least that it serves for something more than to put the name of the brand-.
Huawei joins the fashion of the notch, which houses the internal camera, loudspeaker and front sensors.
Like the other models presented today by the firm, the Huawei P20 Pro also lacks a 3.5 mm jack , so you will have to switch to Bluetooth headphones if you do not use them yet. It should be noted, of course, that has IP67 certification , being the only one of the devices that is resistant to water and dust. To say that we find all this in a body of 7.8 millimeters , something that we find admirable. Let’s meet him now inside.
If we open the hood of the Huawei P20 Pro we find some known components and whose result is more than proven. The P20 Pro mounts a Kirin 970 processor -2.4 GHz-, the same that we have already seen in the Huawei Mate 10 that the firm launched last year. This has a Neuronal Processing Unit (NPU) , which will be responsible for everything related to the “Artificial Intelligence” of the device, from energy management to image recognition. It has a power of 1.92 TFLOPS and will be a fundamental part of the photographic section of the terminal.
In turn, this Kirin 970 is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM memory LPDDR4x (two more than the P20 to dry), 128 GB of internal storage UFS 2.1 , card slot microSD up to 256 GB and a generous 4.000 mAh battery . This has technology Super Quick Charge of Huawei, and is charged through the USB Type-C port located at the bottom of the smartphone.
In the section of connectivity we do not lack absolutely nothing. The P20 Pro has NFC, 4 + 4 MIMO, LTE cat 18 capable of supporting speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 -Necessary for the jump to wireless headphones.
Huawei has decided, intelligently, to incorporate the latest Android in its top of the range. The P20 Pro, how could it be otherwise, has Android 8.1 Oreo under the latest version of your customization layer, EMUI 8.1 . The news is scarce, and we may have to wait until we have the device in hand in order to see for ourselves everything that Huawei wants to offer us in the field of the operating system.
For highlighting some implementation of Android Oreo and EMUI (both versions 8.1), the P20 Pro incorporates a smart gallery which, through AI, is able to locate the photos we are looking for more quickly and accurately. Better to wait for the review to talk more weight about this section.
We arrived at what is possibly the most interesting section of the Huawei P20 Pro: the Photography. The camera is signed by Leica, and is the first lens with zoom that the firm develops for a smartphone . Much has been said about the camera of the P20 Pro and its triple lens, and that Huawei has decided to put in your device two technologies in one . Thus, we find a photographic section composed of the following sensors:
Front camera :
Rear camera :
In this way, Huawei has managed to put both the possibility of optical zoom with a telephoto lens, like improvement in the capture of lights and colors through the monochrome sensor . Account, also, with color temperature sensor in the flash, lighting sensor and laser to improve the autofocus . The camera supports up to ISO 15200, so low-light photos will not be a problem – as you’ll see later, AI helps in this.
It can be done Optical zoom of up to five magnifications (3 with the telephoto lens, 2 with the monochrome and RGB sensors), which will allow extensions to be made without losing detail. In turn, the P20 Pro is capable of record in 4K and in a super-slow camera 960 FPS in 720p resolution .
In addition, Huawei has implemented technology at its top Big Pixel , thanks to which the main RGB sensor is able to gather 4 pixels for each RGB pixel, thus obtaining 2 μm pixels. Put another way, what the P20 Pro does is take 10 megapixel photos “Big Pixel” . And what is achieved with Big Pixel technology? Well basically a better performance in low light conditions, allowing the photos to be better exposed but without being overexposed.
As in previous models, the P20 Pro still has the Ultra Snapshot function , which allows you to take a picture without unlocking the phone by pressing the volume button down three times. The main difference is that it is much faster: it only takes 0.3 seconds.
The most interesting thing about the Huawei P20 Pro camera is the communion between camera and NPU . Artificial Intelligence plays a very important role in Huawei’s commitment to mobile photography, through which they want to bring professional photography closer to the most basic user, who only uses automatic mode. Thus, Huawei has implemented in the P20 Pro camera a series of AI-powered functions very interesting, namely:
