In 1974, the Arecibo Observatory made history by radiating the most powerful radio drive in deep space ever made. The famous Arecibo message was designed by AO 74’s staff, led by Frank Drake, and with the help of the astronomer and famous science communicator Carl Sagan. It contained information about humanity and was intended to be our intergalactic calling card.

“Our society and technology have changed a lot since 1974,” said Francisco Cordova, head of the NSF-funded Arecibo Observatory. “So, if we gathered our message today, what would it say? What would it look like? What would you need to learn to be able to design the right updated message from the globe? These are the questions that we posing to young people around in the world through the new Arecibo message &#821

The NSF-funded facility, home to the largest fully operational radar telescope on the planet, launches its online competition today on the 44th anniversary of the original Arecibo message. Check out the observer’s website for details.

Organizers seek innovative ideas from global collaborative efforts between generations, different and international students to inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts and define New Arecibo Message.

But this will not be an easy task. To get started, teams of up to 10 students in classrooms through the university must decode different clues that will be released online.

As a Chinese puzzle box, teams must learn about space science, break coded messages and solve brain puzzles to qualify, get instructions, register and submit their records. Arecibo is following his first puzzle on his website and social media this afternoon (November 16).

This challenge gives teams nine months to complete their designs. A winner will be announced during the Arecibo Observatory Week activities scheduled for 2019, which includes the special celebration of the 45th anniversary of the original Arecibo message.

“We have a lot of surprises in place for the participants and we will share more details as the race progresses,” Cordova said. “We can not wait to see what our young people all over the world come up with.”
