NCAA's new NET rankings debut: Ohio State shocking No. 1 with Duke No. 6 and Kentucky No. 61

Ohio State Buckeyes is the first team ranked No. 1 in the history of NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET).

NCAA’s new metering value, which completely replaces RPI, debuted Monday. NET will be more than just a very published and debated ranking of all 353 D-I men’s teams; It will also be the sorting tool used on official teams to illustrate the strength of the schedule, quality of profits and losses, and will group the beginning quadrant system. Team archives are constantly referenced and weighed against each other by members of the selection committees, as they debate teams for selected and sown in the NCAA tournament field of 68.

Monday’s disclosure has 6-0 Buckeyes leading the road, followed by Virginia, Texas Tech, Michigan and Gonzaga.

The release of NET rankings comes 20 days into the season and on the downturn of many important games this week. The ratings from here will be available to the public and updated daily. While NET will probably get the most discussion about any analytical ranking (given that it’s officially linked to NCAA), it’s also important to remember that it’s not the best and final all rankings / metrics. It’s just a system. It is important and now the most prominent, but NCAA will continue to have many of the most common and cited advanced metrics, which are also published on layered pages (KenPom, Sagarin Ratings, KPI and ESPN’s analytical parameters: BPI and Strength for Recording).

And if you wonder: What is NET?

In short, it is a mixture of performance-based statistics and predictive algorithms. In the end, it means that NET is predictable in nature; The introduction to some elements of forecasts basically makes a model predictive. It’s a good thing for college basketball and selection committee. ( For a deeper what-to-know about NET, how it was and what it aims to do, read this ).

“It’s a complete replacement (by RPI)”, says senior manager of NCAA men’s basketball Dan Gavitt to CBS Sports during the summer. “This metric, we are very convinced that it achieves what our intention was and what the recommendation was from the NABC. It is a composite ranking from the point of view that it has an essential significance based on performance-oriented because it is so important that, we believe, to committees and coaches in the selection and sowing process. It has some levels of prediction for it now that RPI never did. “

It is a modification in the team and resuming the evaluation process. NCAA presents this graphic to show how NET’s ranking is being built.

“There was no goal or intention, in any way with any segment of the game, to be useful or not, populations of teams,” said Gavitt. “It goes in both directions. We try to create something that is as fair as possible at all levels of the game.” First of all, the results of the games [matter most]. There was no intention, one way or another. We are comfortable and convinced that this is a fair and fair measure for the whole game. “

But NET has some potential foibles. First, the efficiency component does not seem to consider the quality of the opponent on the team’s schedule. So within that, a layer’s efficiency number can theoretically vault or tumble its ranking in NET. There is a potential lane for the 1

0-point cap on the score margin.

Another long-term question is the adjusted winning percentage, which seems to have overlap in the overall formula. Teams get double credits for their winnings and losses, and take some of the data generated in the team value index criteria. There is also the question of the weighted values 1.4 / 1.0 / 0.6 and how they can not be difficult depending on specific locations (specifically on the road). Giving even more concern about the adjusted winning percentage is that the opponent’s quality is not recognized.

So, for example, if a team is 1-1 with a road win and a home post, NCAA’s math says they have played 2.8 “adjusted” games. But if a 1-1 team is angry with a home win and a road loss, there are 1.2 “adjusted” games being played. In fact, they played two games but should not be evaluated as if they did. If you are an over-500 team, the combination of winning and losing home can actually be harmful – which is in violation of the committee’s renewed philosophy of giving road performance.

Such inconsistencies in the overall algorithm will be what critics point to when some teams inevitably end up higher or lower than most expect.

But overall it’s a step forward. And it’s important to be patient because the rankings are developing daily, every week, every month. What we see now will be drastically different from what NET looks like in March.
