OSIRIS REX was launched in 2016 and its mission is to collect a test from Bennu and return it to the ground for study. The spacecraft will spend more than a year landing and mapping the asteroid, and researchers will use that information to choose a sample site. When they do, OSIRIS-REX gently contact and bounce off the surface of Bennu, collecting a sample of the asteroid surface as it does. The spacecraft then begins to return to Earth in 2021 and is scheduled to deliver its test, if all goes well, in September 2023.
In January, OSIRIS-REX took a picture of the Earth and the Moon from over 3 million miles away and last month did NASA A successful test of the robot arm collecting samples from Bennus’s surface.
