NASA news: Latest Ultima Thule images of asteroid show clearest image than | | Science | News

A NASA spacecraft captured images of Ultima Thule, a trans-Neptunian object more than 4 billion miles from Earth. The New Horizon's spacecraft, launched in January 2006, flew past an odd shaped asteroid traveling at speeds above 36,000mph. The new images of Ultima Thule are solved at just 110 feet per pixel, the highest resolution images of the remarkable body New Horizons have received. The frozen space stone called the 2014 MU69 is up to 4.1 billion miles from Earth. [19659003] John Spencer, a researcher at the New Horizon chairman, told Space.com: "Whether these features are craters produced by percussion, sublimation wells, collapse dips or anything else discussed in our science team." New Horizon's lead researcher Alan Stern told Space.com: "Getting those pictures required us to know exactly where both Ultima and New Horizons were when they passed each other over 32,000mph in the dim light of the Kuiper belt, a billion miles beyond Pluto, Spencer noted "This was a much harder observation than we tried in our Pluto-flyby 201 5." “Some of the details we now see on the Ultima Thule’s surface are unlike any object ever explored before.”

2014 MU69 is the most distant object of humanity ever had such a close-up, according to Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

The asteroid is almost 20 miles long and is thought to be unchanged since the early days of the solar system. The first set revealed the asteroid to appear as a clumsy, uneven space peanut composition consisting of two moving lobes called a contact binary.

More pictures have shown that the cradle becomes more like a pancake than a lump.

Images revealed strange light frequencies and dark dents on the asteroid that scientists are trying to understand.

John Spencer said: “If these traits are craters produced by percussion, sublime ation pits, collapse pits or anything else, discussed in our science team.”
