NASA has ordered a security review of the two companies employed to fly astronauts to the International Space Station, a month-long assessment that would mean hundreds of interviews for evaluating the culture at workplaces, the agency said.
The review, which begins next year, would look at both Boeing and SpaceX, the contracted companies to fly NASA’s astronauts and investigate “anything that could affect security” that companies are preparing to fly People for First The time, William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s Associated Human Research Administrator, said in an interview with The Washington Post.
The review was led by the recent evolution of SpaceX’s founder Elon Musk according to three experts who knew about the probe after meeting marijuana and sipping whiskey on a podcast streamed on the Internet. It ranked some on NASA’s highest levels and called on the Agency to look into corporate culture, the people said.
NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs declined to comment on what led to the review. But in a statement, he said that it would “ensure that companies meet NASA’s workplace safety requirements, including compliance with a drug-free environment”.
NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said in an interview that the agency wants to ensure that the public is confident in its human space flights program, especially when companies approach their first flights, scheduled for next year.
“If I see something that is inappropriate, it’s most important to me what is the culture that led to the inappropriate and NASA is involved in it,” he said. “As an agency, we not only guide ourselves but also our entrepreneurs . We must show the American public that when we put an astronaut on a rocket they will be safe. “
Bridenstine said he has” much confidence in the SpaceX team. “But he added that” culture and leadership begin at the top. Something that would cause some to question the security culture, we must fix immediately. “
SpaceX said in a statement that” human space flow is our core mission. There is nothing more important to SpaceX than this attempt, and we take seriously the responsibility NASA has entrusted in order to safely and securely carry American astronauts to and from the International Space Station. “
The company noted that it has been working together for NASA for years and that it” actively promotes workplace safety and we are convinced that our extensive drug-free workforce and workplace programs exceed all applicable contractual terms. “
Boeing said in a statement that corporate culture” ensure the integrity, security and quality of our products, our people and their working environment. As NASA’s trusted partner since the beginning of the human space flight, we share the same values and commit ourselves to continuing our confidence, openness and mission’s success. “
The review comes after an awkward time for Musk, whose behavior led to a scandal series.
Two months ago, Musk went down as chairman of Tesla and paid a fine of $ 20 million as part of an agreement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, who had accused he lied to investors when he tweeted that he had “financing secured” to take the electric car privately.
