WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WFMY) – Did you see that? A bright shooting star that stretches over the sky Tuesday night.

That’s exactly what Chris Mattingly caught on his dashcam while driving along Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem.

The very light meteors are also called “fireballs” because they light up the sky. Meteors seem like a strike of fire in the sky as they enter the atmosphere from space. WFMY News 2’s chief meteorologist Tim Buckley said that the Orionid Meteor Shower peaked this weekend, so this is probably linked to the meteor shower.

People around Piedmont, as far as Charlotte, also reported to see this extra bright shooting star. Some noted that it had a green shade to the tail.

ORIONID METEORES

“The orionid meteors are trash left by Comet Halle,” one of the most famous of all comets, Deborah Byrd of Earthsky. Org.

At the top about 1

5-20 meteors per hour were expected to be visible.

Orionids are some of the fastest and brightest among meteor cities, as the Earth hits the stream of particles almost on its head, according to Space.com. How fast? Most zip cities at 41 miles per second, translating to 148,000 mph.

If the meteors originate from Halley, why are they called Orionids? “Meteors in annual showers are named for the point in our sky as they appear to radiate,” according to Byrd. “The radius of the Orionids is in the direction of the famous constellation Orion Hunter.”
