WASHINGTON – A convicted killer from Honduras was arrested Homeland Security Department Officials said after Friday.
The arrest on November 24 came the same day as an alleged member of the MS-13 crime group from Honduras was arrested to enter the United States illegally, officials said.
Advocates of the migrating caravan of thousands of Central Americans crossing Mexico to the United States have challenged federal estimates that 600 criminals travel in the groups. But US officials said the recent arrests, coupled with arrests in Mexico, justified the estimates.
“As DHS confirmed a few weeks ago, there are at least 600 famous criminals in the caravan flow,” said Tyler Houlton, a departmental spokesperson. “The fact that the border police arrested a killer in the first caravan-related vapor at our southern border shows how real the threat of the caravan is our national safety and security.”
President Donald Trump has called migrants “rocky criminals” and utilized 5,800 active military troops to the southern border to protect against the caravan.
The tensions moved Sunday when immigrants collided with customs and border police personnel at the San Ysidro port and threw stones before spreading with tears of gas.
Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said he visited San Diego last week and CBP commissioner Kevin McAleenan repeated Monday that at least 500 criminals were suspected of traveling with caravans based on intelligence services in the US and other countries. McAleenan said Mexico had arrested 100 immigrants for crimes against crime.
On November 24, Border Patrol arrested three men at 11:00 approximately one mile east of San Ysidro. One suspect, Miguel Angel Ramirez, 46, had been detained in Honduras for murder and released four months ago, officials said. The conviction was confirmed with Honduras consulate, officials said.
He was held with two other Honduran men aged 22 and 38, pending the expulsion of illegal access to the United States
Earlier that day, Border Patrol encountered agents on a man about 6 pm just east of the Calexico port. The man, Jose Villalobos-Jobel, 29, admitted that he was a member of Mara Salvatrucha 13-time and said he traveled to the United States with the caravan. A record check at the El Centro processing station confirmed his identity and he repeated his gangmaker, officials said.
He was imprisoned for treatment and repatriation to Honduras.
