Microsoft’s Javier Soltero, Corporate Vice President of Cortana, will resign at the end of the year, according to a report from ZDNet . Following the publication of the report, Soltero confirmed his resignation in a tweet posted to his personal account.
Soltero started first when he handed up his email app Acompli back in late 2014. He and the Acompli team helped Microsoft improve their Outlook iOS app. Later he became the overall head of Outlook before taking over the main role of Cortana in March this year as part of the company’s massive reorganization that brought a renewed focus on artificial intelligence and cloud as well as the departure of Windows manager Terry Myerson.
/ Some news on the work front …
I have made a decision to leave Microsoft. The last 4 years has been an incredible experience. I’m humble for having been involved in building something that 100M + users are addicted to every day and grateful for working with some amazing people. ZDNet reported last month that Microsoft moves Cortana from its AI research department into its Experiences and Devices team, which signals the company’s interest in building out Cortana more like a viable productivity assistant for existing Microsoft software and less like an experimental research project. Soltero is, as a matter of fact, returned to the entrepreneurial space, but it is unclear what his concrete plans are when he leaves Microsoft.
Update 11/6, 3:30 ET: Added confirmation from Soltero himself, who wrote about his departure from Microsoft on his personal Twitter account.
