And now Singapore wants to be the fourth country to bring in US F-35 wars over and around the South China Sea – a move that is likely to be raised with repentance in Beijing.

In a speech to Parliament last week, Singapore’s Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen announced a plan to buy up to 12 F-35 war roads from the United States. If the deal goes through, Singapore will become the fourth American ally in the Pacific to own them.

The purchase would require US Congress approval, but Ng said both the Trump administration and the Pentagon favored the deal.

Regional Stability

Singapore’s western approach to the South China Sea Analysts say the country’s decision to acquire F-35 technology is an indication of growing concerns in Asia about China’s regional ambitions.

“Singapore probably does not rely on China’s assurance that its southern Chinese sea claims are benign without military intent and will not to lead China to take control of air and sea trade, “says Carl Schuster, a former director of operations in the US Pacific Command Joint Intelligence Center.

China has claimed nearly a full 1.3 million square kilometers of the South China Sea as its sovereign territory. It has aggressively asserted its efforts over recent years against conflict claims from several Southeast Asian nations, construction and fortification islands in the Spratly and Paracel chains.

The United States has continually questioned these claims, sending warships on freedom of navigation operations near the islands and regular flights – and sometimes bombs flights across the South China Sea.

When acquiring the F-35s, Singapore will join US Allies Australia, Japan and South Korea to run the Stilla animals. The United States also has F-35 based in Japan, and they can operate from US Navy vessels moving through the region. Even the UK said earlier this year it would send an aircraft company with F-35s to the 2020 region.

US officials have previously refrained from pursuing a cold war or inclusion policy for China in the Pacific, but Singapore’s decision to join to the list of F-35 countries can risk strengthening that difference between the US and China.

“In this development, Beijing should prove that there is still strong demand in the Asia-Pacific region for a US presence,” said Timothy Heath, senior defense analyst at RAND Corp.

“The air network utilizing the F-35 expands the possibility that these military forces can cooperate in a coalition if needed. This development can provide a strong deterrent message to China about its behavior in the Southern and Eastern China Sea,” Heath said.

Coordination among allies

F-35’s advanced electronic war supply suite can enable seamless integration among allied users and it can be worrying for Beijing.

A new F-35B fighter aircraft is prepped to take off from the tire in the UK's rcraft operator HMS Queen Elizabeth in 2018. Jet electronics enables close coordination between allied air forces.

Peter Layton, before Defense analyst at the Griffith Asia Institute in Australia, says the F-35’s rapid and electronic warfare capabilities make it a “force multiplier”. The F-35s can sneak past air defenses and send detailed targeting information to subsequent planes carrying long-range missiles or land-based anti-ship missile systems, he added.

“The acquisition can encourage China to think about how it can improve its air defense network in the South China Sea and on ships to detect and target stealth aircraft such as Singapore’s F-35,” Layton says.

Previous F-35 Purchases from US Allies has led to bravado from Chinese media.

A January report in state-sponsored global times removed any threats from the “US-35 circle of friends” in the Asia-Pacific region. Chinese analysts say the F-35 was not matching for China’s fifth-generation stealth jet, J-20.

But despite the fact that the F-35 procurement sends strong signals to China, analysts agree that Singapore is sending them carefully.

Defense Minister Ng did not mention China when he revealed buy plans Last week, his presentation to Parliament just said that the animals “will significantly contribute to the (air force) ability to protect Singapore’s sovereignty and security.” 9659002] He also said that the country was aware of how it acquired them, to buy four with its first order, and then add up to eight others if the first batch fit requirements.

Two Singaporean F-16s fly in formation with an F-16 15 years 2017. The country's defense minister says the F-16 century will be outdated in 2030.

While Singapore has been a close and long-lasting American ally – it is also worthy of a US naval facility – it tends to be a low key

“Despite good relations with the United States, Singapore is generally reluctant to take a leading role in challenging Chinese power because of its small size and depth of economic ties with China,” Heath said. .

Schuster added: “Singapore does not want anger China … Singapore tends to act silently and with nuances and subtleties.”

However, the subtle method should not be misunderstood for military weakness.

Australia’s Lowy Institute ranked Singapore’s military power 10th among 25 Asian nations last year – just behind Australia and ahead of Singapore, Malaysia and Malaysia.

Singapore has high quality military hardware and strong defense relations in the region.

“Singapore sees its role as support for regional security and stability, not as a member of any alliance targeted at any particular nation,” Schuster said.
