Then. Marco Rubio has long been one of the strongest critics of the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduros. But on Sunday, the Venezuelan strongman must have thanked the senator from Florida after giving him a gift in the form of a tweet. In conjunction with tweets the Venezuelan government condemned and citing Bible verses Rubio sent a graphic tweet showing a pre- and post-style set of photographs by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Qaddafi was brutally murdered after an American bombing in 2011 as part of a NATO-led intervention. Human Rights Watch has characterized death as a possible war crime.

“Qaddafi was a horrible man. He also became rape with a bayonet and beaten in the street by a mob , and an American Senator celebrates it, ” journalist Dan Murphy wrote on Twitter . “What time to live.” In short, thanks to Rubio, Maduro has something else he can point out as evidence of his claim that he is the victim of an American sponsored coup.

Rubio’s tweet takes on more importance if you think it came a few hours after that he posted another pair of pictures showing the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega during arrest in the United States.

The pair of tweets were anything but subtle and apparently appear to be a message for Maduro. And it will certainly be taken that way by Maduro and his inner circle in Caracas. Characterizing the Venezuelan president as the next in a leader the US wants to deposit is precisely the message that Maduro is spying on Venezuelans, as he rejects the much-needed international aid.

Many on Twitter were quick to criticize Rubio for sending exactly the erroneous message that the United States should be reprimanding about Venezuela right now. Especially from a senator. “Calling another Libya is not the way to defeat Maduro,” writes Ian Bremmer . Oliver Stuenkel, an international relations professor in Brazil, was a bit more direct: ” This is remarkably stupid .”
