At the age of 30, at least 30 people, including five children, were killed after the bus they dropped into a channel in Karnataka’s Mandya district of ANI . The accident occurred in Kanganamaradi village of Pandavapura city. The driver survived the accident.
“After inspecting the site, I saw that the bus stretched from the road and walked over 60 feet of the bank around the canal and entered the water,” said Transport Minister Thamanna, according to Hindustan Times . The absence of barriers to banks is the biggest problem, he added. “I will talk to the prime minister and make sure that this work is taken up early.”
The State Minister for Less Irrigation, CS Puttaraju, responsible for the Mandya district, said the driver’s negligence caused the accident. “We have already fished 28 bodies and we will soon get a clearer picture,” said Puttaraju. “The driver seems to have been out of the bus and fled. Apart from him, a student, Rohith, also fled.”
Karnataka’s top minister, HD Kumaraswamy, visited the scene and announced a replacement of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased’s families ANI reported. The prime minister is considering postponing the state award ceremony, his office tweeted.
Several national leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi expressed their sympathy.
