Manchester United: Should Solskjaer really be behind the wheel?

Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, Manchester United have been struggling with their form and haven’t been able to clench a premier league title.

Having been appointed as an interim coach midway through the 2018 season after Jose Mourinho was sacked, owing to a very bad spell leaving them – 11 points adrift champions league qualification in the EPL Table, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer went on an astounding run pulling United out of a dire situation in the knick of time.

The former striker who spent more than a decade as a United player learning from Sir Alex Ferguson is trying to reinstate the same attacking approach ingrained in him, which saw United win 13 league titles. Solskjaer scored one of the most famous goals during the 1999 Champions League Final to complete a historic treble and has managed to imprint the same fighting attitude on his own team.

Solskjaer outlined his first task as putting smiles back on the players’ faces. The feel-good factor allowed a  talented squad to show their true potential to the world. “Ole’s at the wheel”  sung  to  Stone Roses’ tune “Waterfall” has resonated around every United game home and away in recent times.

The team star Paul Pogba was being heavily criticised for his performance while working under Jose Mourinho and was being labelled as a waste of money by many of the supporters.

However, ever since the arrival of Solskjaer it could be clearly seen that there were improvements in his game as he started to play a more crucial role in United’s midfield, getting more involved with the goals scored, as the game was being built around him.

Although the Red Devils started off great under Solskjaer’s direction, there has been quite a drop in the form of the players, and the results have been thoroughly demoralising as of late.

Paul Pogba, after a series of encouraging performances when Solskjaer first assumed the reins in December, has returned to being the non-existent presence in the midfield, which he was back under Mourinho’s rule .

United’s most recent games have seen the players struggling to cope with the pressure, with a 3-0 away defeat against Barcelona in the Champions League, a 4-0 thrashing by Everton and a miserable 2-0 loss at the hands of their neighbors in the Premier League.

Questions are being raised about offering Solskjaer a permanent contract, and whether it was the best of decisions taken by the United board.

Every team faces certain high and low phases during the course of a season and although initially United were working in a very fine-tuned manner under Solskjaer’s reformed guidance, things have seemed to take a wrong turn during the final stages of the season. One however, shouldn’t be passing on judgements just yet and should rather give Solskjaer the chance to work on the team afresh for what follows.
