Tafahree Maynard, 18, has been charged with devastating abuse and felony words at the death of Gwinnett County officer Antwan Toney on Saturday, said the county police department. Maynard is still big.
Another suspect, Isaiah Pretlow, 19, was arrested on Saturday and has been commanded by aggravated attacks, police said.
Toney, 30, responded to an anonymous 911 call reporting a suspected vehicle parked near Shiloh Middle School on Saturday afternoon when he was killed, police chief Butch Ayers said.
The officer approached the car when the police said Maynard shot a weapon from the inside and hit him.
Another officer came back and threw Toney away but died in a hospital, Sgt. Jake Smith of Gwinnett County Police Department said.
Police have not released details about Toney’s injuries and have not said if someone in suspected car fought or how many fires were fired.
After the shot, the suspicious black sedan ran on four doors, crashed a mile away, and the suspects fled the vehicle.
Police believe Pretlow drove the car and that as many as four people were inside.
“They fled the scene and crashed without an officer in the hunt,” Smith said.
At some point after driving away from the car, Pretlow pointed a gun to an officer and the officer kicked his weapon against him, police said. Pretlow, who was not injured, faces an aggravated abuse arising from this meeting.
He ran to a wooded area but was arrested hours later by American marshals, police said.
Police attendance was heavy Saturday night in districts a few miles east of Stone Mountain as officers, SWAT and K9 teams searched for Maynard. A helicopter also looked at flying over the vicinity of the school.
Toney, originally from southern California, had been with the department for almost three years. Before he was an officer, he had been a security guard, police said.
His Gwinnett colleagues recall a very jovial person dedicated to his job and dedicated to his society, said Butch Ayers policeman.
Gwinnett County is located in the capital Atlanta and has 920,000 inhabitants. Toney kills the first death in the county since May 1993 when an officer was killed in a traffic accident.
Three officers were killed in April 1964.
Toney died was the second deadly shooter of a law enforcement officer this week. North Carolina State Trooper Kevin K. Conner was killed on Wednesday during a traffic jam near the border with South Carolina. A suspect was taken in storage.
