A Selden man was fatal when he returned to his vehicle in the middle of Long Island Expressway after inspecting a previous crash early Saturday morning, police said in Suffolk County.
Eric Preto, 31, was declared dead at the scene, police said in a press release. His wife Gabriella Preto, 29, and their 2 year old son were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Preto drove a 2016 Nissan East in the interstate highway near exit 49, for Route 110, in Melville at 12.30 when he finished a 2018 Mercedes-Benz operated by Madhava Reddy, 58, by Dix Hills, police said.
Preto came out of his car to check the damage and talk to Reddy, police said. The vehicle was shut off and remained in the middle lane.
When Preto returned to his vehicle, he was struck by a Subaru 201
5, driven by Jennifer Massaro, 38, of Smithtown.
A 2017 Nissan, driven by Stephen Raia, 24, by Commack and then hit Preto car, police said. Reddy and Massaro were also taken to a hospital for evaluation. Raia was treated on site.
At the scene early on Saturday, patrol officers examined three cars with significant damage as they waited for detectors to arrive.
The police shot the four cars for a security check. The survey closed off parts of the highway for several hours overnight.
