AirPod Wireless Ear Plugs are about to be Apple’s best growth product in the foreseeable future, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo said that Apple will release an “upgraded model with wireless charging support” in the first quarter of 2019.
Kuo also said a brand new design AirPods are currently starting to start in early 2020 …
Kuo forecasts dramatic unit growth for AirPods with devices rising from 16 million units in 2017 to over 100 million in 2021. He calls them Apple’s most popular accessories ever.
He indicates that existing iPhone users are more likely to buy AirPods than to upgrade the phone itself.
Kuo refers to the 1Q2019 update as a “Wireless Charge Support Model”, which first sounds like the Apple Wireless Charging Case originally announced with AirPower carpet in September 2017.
He continues to say that the new AirPods case is coming to have an internal component upgrade of “rigid-flex board”, which becomes more expensive to manufacture. The hinge hinge will also be reformatted to support appearance changes and higher thermal requirements, and the cost of that component will increase by ~ 60%.

Interestingly, Kuo also says that the new AirPods will have upgrades to the Bluetooth specification. This indicates that AirPods themselves will receive an upgrade, along with the case. It sounds like Apple will fulfill its original promise to sell AirPod’s Wireless Charger Bag as a separate add-on accessory for existing AirPod owners, and release a minor review on the entire product at the same time – including the Wireless Charger.
Kuo does not go into detail about what the “brand new design” 2020 AirPods will contain. Earlier rumors have suggested features like sweat resistance, Hey Siri integration and more.
Kuo did not mention AirPower carpet at all in today’s report despite the obvious link between the AirPods case and the apparently dead or delayed Apple charging carpet. For what it’s worth, Kuo said in an October report he expected new AirPods and AirPower by the end of 2018 or early 2019.
